Kodály: Háry János Suite, Dances Of Galánta, Etc / Levi
$11.59 Also available as part of the 2-CD Collectables box THE LEGEND AT HIS BEST!
Includes original LP liner notes and reissue liner notes by Mark Marymont.
One of several two-fer reissues of Percy Faith's classic Columbia LPs on the Collectables reissue label, TARA'S THEME/JEALOUSY combines two of the Toronto-born orchestra leader/arranger/producer's best-selling albums on one disc. TARA'S THEME, from 1961, is most notable for containing the original version of Faith's signature song, the gently swaying, instantly recognizable "Theme From A Summer Place," his biggest hit. The rest of the album, which is primarily composed of movie themes, is equally remarkable. JEALOUSY is a darker and more brooding affair, featuring stately but dramatic renditions of a dozen classic love songs.
This disc is also available as half of the PERCY FAITH: A LEGEND AND HIS MUSIC box set, along with the CAMELOT/MY FAIR LADY reissue.
2 LPs on 1 CD: TARA'S THEME (1961)/JEALOUSY (1960).
| | Percy Faith Bouquet/Bouquet Of Love CD (1959)
Kodály: Háry János Suite, Dances Of Galánta, Etc / Levi
$11.59 Possibly Percy Faith's two most famous LPs other than A SUMMER PLACE, 1959's BOUQUET and the 1961 sequel BOUQUET OF LOVE are quintessential Faith. Lushly orchestrated, with Faith's trademark keening strings, these two albums epitomize orchestral easy listening music. The song selection is heavy on the standards, including Johnny Mercer's "Laura," "The Song from Moulin Rouge," "Ebb Tide," Rodgers and Hart's "Blue Moon" and "Stella By Starlight." While the quality of the remastering job is very good, unfortunately, three songs were excised from BOUQUET OF LOVE for space considerations.
Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont.
2 LPs on 1 CD: BOUQUET (1959)/BOUQUET OF LOVE (1962).

Kodály: Háry János Suite, Dances Of Galánta, Etc / Levi
$13.89 This disc was Gramophone's "Recording of the Month" for February 1999.
Maurice Ravel's piano concertos are works of unapologetic neoclassicism, in their use of traditional concerto forms with modern twists of harmonic and melodic gestures. The G-major concerto is the freer of the two, from its opening whip crack to its rollicking finale, with the sublime Adagio in the middle. Pierre Boulez leads the Cleveland Orchestra here, an ensemble with which he has been closely associated for many years, and one which knows his take on this repertoire well. Pianist Krystian Zimerman's pianism shines, with flawless technique and sensitivity to Ravel's melodies.
The more serious-sounding D-major concerto for the left hand--commissioned by Paul Wittgenstein--was to have been recorded in Cleveland, but Zimerman felt that the chosen piano didn't suit the acoustic of Cleveland's Masonic Hall, and the work was instead recorded later in London. Zimerman excels with the London Symphony Orchestra as he did with the Cleveland. Between the two concertos, Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra provide a spirited reading of the 'Valses nobles et sentimentales,' further Ravelian neoclassic gems, inspired by Schubert. A fine outing from Boulez and Zimerman, and an altogether enjoyable disc.
