Ravel: Rapsodie Espagonle; Debusssy: Ibéria
$8.05 What looked at first like a premature marketing ploy -- a greatest-hits collection after only three albums? -- now makes some historical sense, for founding member Lee Ritenour left the quartet not long after the CD's release. So this is in essence a summary of Fourplay's first edition, a collection of mildly funky, ethereally voiced selections from Fourplay, Between the Sheets, and Elixir, where Ritenour, Bob James, Nathan East, and Harvey Mason integrate their personalities into a smoothly homogenized whole. To sweeten the pot for the hardcore fans, Fourplay recorded three new tracks for the album -- Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground" with vocals by Take 6, "4 Play and Pleasure," and "Any Time of Day" -- all fairly uneventful. The musicianship is impeccable, the production velvety, and despite the suitable-for-lovemaking-and-commuting stamp of approval, one wishes that these fine players would just cut loose and really rip once in a while. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Additional personnel includes: Take 6, Phil Collins, El DeBarge, Chaka Khan (vocals).

Ravel: Rapsodie Espagonle; Debusssy: Ibéria
$13.69 Comparisons to Sarah Brightman of "Phantom of the Opera" and Celtic vocalists Enya and Loreena McKennitt are inevitable, but Cecilia has a distinctive vocal style that is uniquely her own. Her pure, bell-like voice is beautifully enhanced by the radiant backdrops of collaborator, flutist, and producer Tim Wheater. The program of strong material includes the traditional "Amazing Grace," augmented with whale sounds to create a plaintive prayer for them. Mike Rowland's "Silver Wings" is given a haunting voice by Cecilia with stirring results, and the album closes as it had opened with the Norwegian reading of Grieg's "Solvieg's Song." ~ MusD
Recorded at Marcus Studios, London.

Ravel: Rapsodie Espagonle; Debusssy: Ibéria
$17.15 Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
The title THE ANGELS OF LIGHT SING "OTHER PEOPLE" refers not to other songwriters, but rather songs about particular people who've inspired/affected Gira in one way or another. He must know some fascinating characters: "Michael's White Hands" is a tapestry of buzzing, jangling string instruments conveying a chant/rant about a disorienting parallel world, the likes of which the Doors' Jim Morrison used to visit. "To Live Through Someone" has a catchy lilt that recalls British Isles' folk music, and the sweetly sung background vocals provide a welcome contrast to Gira's chilly, yet strangely compassionate, old-hermit-of-the-forest delivery. For those feeling haunted the memory of someone (or some particular time), SING "OTHER PEOPLE" may be an ideal form of musical catharsis.
