Ravel: Boléro
$11.49 Few pop song catalogs have been as underappreciated as that of the Carpenters. Though many of their best songs ("Rainy Days and Mondays," "We've Only Just Begun") were penned by equally underrated songwriter Paul Williams, pianist Richard Carpenter got his compositional licks in too, and it was his vocalist/drummer sister Karen whose sweet but unaffected vocal style cemented these tunes' popularity and helped place them in the '70s pop canon for all time.
This collection, though essentially a functional "best of," focuses, as the title makes plain, on LOVE SONGS. Of course, it doesn't hurt that such tunes happened to be the duo's stock in trade. From the achingly evanescent "Close To You" to the uplifting, jubilant "Top Of The World," these songs celebrates the ups and downs of romance. Lend an ear and be reminded of the grace and beauty that existed in the musical world of Richard and Karen Carpenter.
1997 release featuring 20 of their best loved ballads, including 13 of their 20 top 40 hits! Contains 'Solitaire','We've Only Just Begun', 'Superstar', 'Rainy Days AndMondays', 'Top Of The World', '(They Long To Be) Close ToYou', 'For All We Know', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hurting EachOther', 'Goodbye To Love' and much more! An A&M release.

| | Carpenters Interpretations: A 25th Anniversary Celebration CD (1995)
Ravel: Boléro
$7.19 Although the Carpenters were hardly considered fashionable during their '70s commercial heyday (rock critics particularly detested them), by the time this greatest-hits album (fleshed out with a few previously unreleased tracks) was released, the critical consensus was swinging in their favor. Maybe it was a '90s irony thing (lounge revival, anyone?); more likely it was just that with the passage of time, people could finally hear the melancholy that lurked under the surface-happy face of the Carpenters' lush production style. In any case, this is a terrific best-of, with all the hits plus their all-time weirdest cover, Klaatu's "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." You make the call: Karen and Richard Carpenter--secret space cadets?
Includes liner notes by Paul Grein & Richard Carpenter.
Digitally remastered by Arnie Acosta.
Recorded between March 1970 & March 1980.

| | Ray Conniff Singles Collection Vol. 1 CD (2005)
Ravel: Boléro
$10.69 Vol. 1 of Collectables' Ray Conniff Singles Collection series collects songs from the easy listening giant's prolific 1960s and early-'70s period. Longtime fans will savor this release, as none of the 26 tunes have ever made the jump from their original 45-rpm wax to digital. This is classic Conniff in the "Happiness Is" tradition, songs that are both nostalgic and innocent without the overwhelming sense of kitsch that invaded some of his mid-'70s work. Highlights include "We Must Forget We Ever Met," "Sleepy Shores," "Moonlight Brings Memories," and "Songs Are for Lovers." ~ James Christopher Monger
Audio Remixer: Debra Parkinson.

| | John Pizzarelli Knowing You CD (2005)
Ravel: Boléro
$11.15 Guitarist/vocalist John Pizzarelli returns with another solid collection of tastefully swinging standards on Knowing You. Never straying too far from what he does best, Pizzarelli is nonetheless an exciting improviser and pleasing vocalist who always finds a way to make an old chestnut of a tune his own. Here, his rapport with such longtime bandmates as pianist Ray Kennedy, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, and drummer Tony Tedesco is instinctual, full of humor, and filled with call-and-response interplay. To these ends, Pizzarelli has compiled an enjoyable set of well- and lesser-known standards, including the sprightly swinger "Coffee, Black," the elegantly mellow "The Shadow of Your Smile," and the sweetly unexpected Brian Wilson classic "God Only Knows." That interesting song choice and the Rupert Holmes-esque original title track also show Pizzarelli's ability to push his talents into contemporary areas without alienating his fan base. Also joining in are Pizzarelli's wife, vocalist Jessica Molaskey, along with pianist Larry Goldings, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and others. ~ Matt Collar
