(4 Customer Reviews)
This 1999 reissue contains three bonus tracks not on the original release.
Bossa Antigua picks up the samba-based rim shots of drummer Connie Kay on Take Ten and tries to make a whole new record out of them. While the title track duplicates the original percolating groove of "El Prince," other tracks like "Samba Cantina" revert to a typical bossa nova rhythm of the period, which leads one to conclude that "bossa antigua" is merely whatever Desmond says it is. Of the album's two non-originals, "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," of course, is made-to-order for Desmond's wistful, sophisticated temperament, and he delivers exactly what a Desmond devotee would expect and love; and "A Ship Without a Sail" has some memorable off-the-cuff solo ideas. Jim Hall is around again to lend subtle rhythm support and low-key savvy in his solos, and like many Desmond companions of this period, he makes a fine sparring partner in the contrapuntal exchanges. The Brubeck Quartet's Gene Wright again lends a sturdy hand on bass. The playing is wonderful throughout, though just missing the full-throttle inspiration of Take Ten. ~ Richard S. Ginell

Three fine alternate takes enhance this very desirable release." Paul Desmond Bossa Antigua Songs Bossa Antigua Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Paul, Jim, Connie, and Gene. What more do you need. This CD features two of the best rhythm men who ever played. Gene Wright and Connie Kay play as though they were joined at the hip rather than just casual players on an obscure CD. I love Connie Kay and get caught up listening to him and forgeting about how talented and melodic Desmond and Hall are. This is a series of beautiful tunes played by accomplished musicians. Great Music lives on... The music on this recording is great! It clearly demonstrates Desmond's love for the Bossa Nova rhythm. Due to the recording techniques of the day, the recording itself sounds a bit dated (the reason for the rating of 4 instead of 5), but the music still shines through. In addition to Desmond's distinctive playing style, the listener also gets the benefit of Jim Hall's subtle stylings on guitar. Any Desmond fan should have this recording in his/her collection. Desmond and Hall , Excellent Again I grew up listening to Paul Desmond as my stepfather is a true jazz afficiando(sp). But it wasn't until I was an adult that I really appreciated how great Desmond is. This recording finds Paul and Jim Hall( guitar) together again playing a South American sound that Hall brought back from Brazil. Mellow alto sax with that tradmark " dry martini" sound of Desmond and Halls efficent crisp guitar work, really a keeper. This CD has been in my rotation since I got it.
Buy this CD , if you do not love Paul Desmond , You will.

Paul Desmond and Jim Hall, enough said. I believe this group has recorded some of the best Bossa Nova I have heard. Desmond is not shackled by Brubeck's lock-step playing and is free as a bird on this CD. How can I say enough about Connie Kay. He is the best. This is a beautiful blend of musicians playing beautiful music. Submitted by tom (Portland Or) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bossa Antigua album
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts ...

$16.19 This double-CD set is not only the best of Bill Chase's output but -- comprising all three of their albums -- virtually their complete finished studio work, before the plane crash that killed Chase and much of the group. The mastering on this Wounded Bird reissue is excellent, with a full solid bass sound topped by soaring highs on the brass and no compression to speak of. It's not as though this catalog has been overused, in terms of its master tape library -- apart from the hit "Get It On" -- but it's still good to know that the stuff has been well handled in terms of being digitalized. Additionally, the producers have reprinted Nat ...
| | Breakfast At Tiffany's CD (1961) Original Soundtrack
Bossa Antigua CD music
$7.59 Recorded on December 8, 1960 and April 27, 1961. Originally released on RCA (2362).
By 1961, film composer Henry Mancini was already well known in Hollywood for his jazzy, brassy scores to Touch of Evil and Peter Gunn. But it was this effervescent soundtrack for Blake Edwards' adaption of Truman Capote's wistful novella that propelled Mancini into the major league of Hollywood ...

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of musicians for his sonic flights, where hard-bop and modal styles could be combined with a wide-open, increasingly elastic sound. Before settling on Shorter (present here), he tried the conventionally hearty, blues-accented bop approach of saxophonist ...
| | Clifford T Ward Sometime Next Year CD (2005) (Import)
Bossa Antigua CD music
$15.65 SOMETIME NEXT YEAR is a 16-track 1986 reissue by Clifford T. Ward, including "Prams," "Who Cares," "Quiz Show," and "Turbo."
Clifford T. Ward's 1986 album, released at a time when the singer/songwriter was just developing multiple sclerosis, was more a collection of demos than a finished product. Ian Summers, the A&R man who signed Ward to Roger Whittaker's Tembo label, has said that he intended to re-record the album with an orchestra, though that didn't come about. The production certainly has a cheapish, dated mid-'80s feel, particularly in the cloddish drums. But the record's insignificance isn't all due to the fairly bare arrangements -- no amount of sugar-coating ...
