Personnel: Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Jim Hall (guitar); Eugene Wright, Gene Cherico (bass); Connie Kay (drums).JazzTimes (12/99, p.153) - "...The interplay between [Jim] Hall and Desmond is always great, but the unhurried elegance of BOSSA ANTIGUA is special even for this great team. Three fine alternate takes enhance this very desirable release." Paul Desmond Bossa Antigua Songs Bossa Antigua Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) Paul, Jim, Connie, and Gene. What more do you need. This CD features two of the best rhythm men who ever played. Gene Wright and Connie Kay play as though they were joined at the hip rather than just casual players on an obscure CD. I love Connie Kay and get caught up listening to him and forgeting about how talented and melodic Desmond and Hall are. This is a series of beautiful tunes played by accomplished musicians. Great Music lives on... The music on this recording is great! It clearly demonstrates Desmond's love for the Bossa Nova rhythm. Due to the recording techniques of the day, the recording itself sounds a bit dated (the reason for the rating of 4 instead of 5), but the music still shines through. In addition to Desmond's distinctive playing style, the listener also gets the benefit of Jim Hall's subtle stylings on guitar. Any Desmond fan should have this recording in his/her collection. Desmond and Hall , Excellent Again I grew up listening to Paul Desmond as my stepfather is a true jazz afficiando(sp). But it wasn't until I was an adult that I really appreciated how great Desmond is. This recording finds Paul and Jim Hall( guitar) together again playing a South American sound that Hall brought back from Brazil. Mellow alto sax with that tradmark " dry martini" sound of Desmond and Halls efficent crisp guitar work, really a keeper. This CD has been in my rotation since I got it.
Buy this CD , if you do not love Paul Desmond , You will.

Paul Desmond and Jim Hall, enough said. I believe this group has recorded some of the best Bossa Nova I have heard. Desmond is not shackled by Brubeck's lock-step playing and is free as a bird on this CD. How can I say enough about Connie Kay. He is the best. This is a beautiful blend of musicians playing beautiful music. Submitted by tom (Portland Or) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Bossa Antigua
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield ...

$15.05 Only the most hardhearted of cynics could resist the melancholy sweetness of this album's beloved title track. The song was a hit in 1968 and only became the opening cut on this wonderful album some 20 years later. This well-known recording of the tender ballad--complete with a 16-piece string ...

In the 1960s, trumpeter Miles Davis became a star outside of the jazz world, first with what history refers to as "the Quintet" with Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock, then with his highly influential post-BITCHES BREW electric bands. But there was a "transitional" period, after John Coltrane left Davis's employ and before the Shorter/Hancock era, which the SEVEN STEPS box set based around the SEVEN STEPS TO HEAVEN album documents in its entirety, often in a live context.
Davis was seeking the right combination of musicians for his sonic flights, where hard-bop and modal styles could be combined with a wide-open, increasingly elastic sound. Before settling on Shorter (present here), he tried the conventionally hearty, blues-accented bop approach of saxophonist George Coleman and the rippling, somewhat more avant-garde Sam Rivers. Both soar and sear ...

$26.79 ON THE CORNER enjoys a special cult status among musicians, anticipating as it does the punk funk/acid jazz movements. For Miles Davis, ON THE CORNER was another seismic shift. Miles was particularly fond of the lyric sweep of Hendrixian electric guitar, the James Brown-like rhythmic thump of Fender bass, and the bell-like timbre and chordal possibilities of the Fender/Rhodes electric piano. Now the trumpeter sought to incorporate the feel of street rhythms from around the world and to reflect the influence of modern electronic composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen.
So while ON THE CORNER is generously populated with top-flight jazz players, Davis was zeroing in on a contemporary ...
| | Fairburn Royals Whistler CD (2004)
Bossa Antigua
$9.75 Formed in December 2000 in Athens, Georgia, Fairburn Royals continue to stand the test of time and are now poised, with the release of The Whistler (the band's third full-length record), to emerge from the shadows of the rich Athens musical landscape.Starting out as basically a four-track project, Fairburn Royals' sound is characterized as rough-around-the-edges lo-fi dream-pop which combine the grit of Sebadoh, the wit of Ween, and the rural psych-pop leanings that are a natural by-product of drinking the water in Athens. The band's lyrics draw heavily from day-to-day events we all encounter, and are at first blush simplistic. However, when put together in the context of a full record of songs, the lyrical composition actually makes a statement about everyday life. Vocalist Matt Lisle lends a very versatile voice to the equation, and is equally adept at soft, dreamy vocals as he is at rock outbursts. The band makes generous ...
