SEX WITHOUT BODIES introduces to the world at large a songwriter whose name belongs in the pantheon of greats like Randy Newman, Donald Fagen and Lyle Lovett. Like those writers, David Cantor, the songwriting, guitar-playing, goatee-wearing half of Dave's True Story (could they be the Eurythmics of the Cocktail Nation?) uses pop and jazz forms as a vehicle for literate, highly ironic, darkly humorous observations about the underbelly of the anima. His partner, vocalist Kelly Flint, makes the word into flesh with a cool sense of distance that allows Cantor's biting lyrics to hit their target with maximum efficiency. Flint's style leans toward the jazzy pop tradition of people like Astrud Gilberto, Keely Smith and Julie London.
With unadorned production by ace singer-songwriter Richard Julian and performances by top shelf NYC jazz musicians like Ben Monder, Jeff Berman and Crispin Cioe, Dave's True Story steps to the front of the neo-lounge line, showing up lesser acts like Squirrel Nut Zippers and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. Cantor and Flint's relationship to such groups is roughly that of Nirvana to Bush, and the depth inherent in SEX WITHOUT BODIES bears this equation out admirably.

With her third album, FAITH, Faith Hill tasted pop crossover success--and she evidently liked the taste. BREATHE, Hill's fourth release, takes the pop/country stylings of FAITH to the next level. It's an appealing collection of pop, gospel, R&B, rock, and ballads, with just a bit of country thrown in. The production, featuring Hill's big voice surrounded by booming drums and screaming guitars, is so slick you could skate on ...

Those who rhapsodize about the gifts of great American songwriters such as Cole Porter and the Gershwin brothers, while bemoaning the current state of popular song, would do well to investigate the work of David Cantor, guitarist and songwriter for Dave's True Story. While the group, which revolves around Cantor and cool postmodern chanteuse Kelly Flint, is often lumped in with the neo-lounge movement, their work is more complex than that categorization would suggest.

Sex Without Bodies songs
$11.29 Dave's True Story's self-titled debut album was originally issued as a limited release in 1994. This 2002 reissue includes bonus tracks and is the first widely distributed version.
The eponymous debut album by Dave's True Story won substantial acclaim upon its initial release in 1994. Following its release, the New York Times devoted a Sunday edition article to the group, which went on to win the 1995 Kerrville New Music Award because of this debut effort. The album showcased the eerie vocals of Kelly Flint and the songwriting of Dave Cantor, the man who gave the group its name. Together, they create relaxed lounge music with both jazz and pop overtones, though more the former than the latter. In particular, "Crazy Eyes" stands out because ...

Sex Without Bodies music CDs
$13.99 On the first of two Circle CDs taken from Lang-Worth Radio Transcriptions that feature Boyd Raeburn's Orchestra, Raeburn's transitional band is well showcased. Succeeding his undocumented sweet orchestra of the late '30s and preceding his radical 1945 group, this big band essentially played advanced swing with most arrangements contributed by Eddie Finckel or George Williams. There are some dated vocals by Don Darcy and a couple from Marjorie Wood (including "Who Started Love" which has the only George Handy arrangement ...

Sex Without Bodies songs
$16.39 Like many soul-jazz musicians, Melvin Sparks moved into funkier directions as the mid-'70s approached, whether out of pressure from marketing trends, a desire to explore that area, or both. Two of his albums from this era, 1973's Texas Twister and 1975's '75, were combined into one disc for this CD reissue. As funk-influenced soul-jazz efforts go, 1973's Texas Twister is a decent one, though not innovative or tremendously exciting. Working as the ...
