Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$8.49 OOPS!... I DID IT AGAIN was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album. "Oops!...I Did It Again" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
This second album by the former Mouseketeer turned nymphet heartthrob breaks little new ground compared to BABY ONE MORE TIME. The formula here remains, deliberately, the same: a candy-colored mix of Eurodance, hip-hop, and old-fashioned pop ballads. As before, the lyrics split the difference between "Baby, I love you so bad," as in "Can't Make You Love Me," and "Sorry, I think of you just as a friend," in the title song.
There are also some genuinely amusing moments, as in the conversational finale of "Oops!" in which Britney, after being informed that her boyfriend has recovered the jewel the old lady dropped into the ocean at the end of the TITANIC movie, replies "Oh, you shouldn't have." Most of the stuff here is, of course, transparently disposable pop, but to give Spears her due, she's a far, far better singer than any of the mall-rat pop stars of the late '80s.
Engineers include: John Amatiello, Harvey Mason, Jr., Rodney Jerkins.

| | Vanessa-Mae Storm CD (1998)
Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$11.69 Former classical violinist Vanessa-Mae follows her pop debut album, THE VIOLIN PLAYER, with another energetic marriage of classical music, pop, and techno beats. Most of the songs on STORM are lively instrumentals, wild remakes of classical pieces like Bach's "Partita in E," whose opening movement finds new life here as "Bach Street Preludes." In the liner notes, Vanessa-Mae offers this statement to potential critics: "Anyone who thinks this is blasphemy is unlikely to be in the good company of a genius such as the pianist/composer Rachmaninov, who performed his own 'untraditional' version of this violin piece on piano." Vanessa-Mae's whispery vocals have a delicate prettiness on 'I'm a Doun' and "Embrasse Moi (You Fly Me Up)."

Personnel includes: Vanessa-Mae (violin).

| | Jon Balke Book Of Velocities CD (2007)
Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$15.25 Jon Balke is a pianist from Norway whose music criss-crosses the genres of jazz, rock, and New Age. While he's performed and recorded with groups such as Magnetic North Orchestra and Oslo 13, BOOK OF VELOCITIES presents Balke alone, unplugged, and unedited. BOOK is practically just that, a collection of 19 short instrumental chapters, wherein Balke explores the entire piano, inside and out. But this album isn't merely a collection of vague or haphazard sounds. There is a logic guiding his vignettes, an abstract but very deliberate structure and plot to each note played. If one is in the mood for some challenging beauty on the 88's, Balke's BOOK is worth exploring.
Debut solo piano session by Norwegian pianist/composer, who's led the ECM projects Masqualero, Magnetic North Orchestra and Batagraf. Nineteen pieces, many of them beautiful miniatures that blend intricvate composition with improvisation.
Photographers: Christoph Egger; Colin Eick; Jon Balke.
Personnel: Jon Balke (piano).
Recording information: Radio Studio Drs, Zurich, Switzerland.
| | Jacob Young Sideways CD (2008)
Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$15.19 A thoroughly modern guitarist, Jacob Young (from Norway) was influenced chiefly by masters Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Young's style is of the dense, mood-laden fusion variety particular to ECM Records. Recalling the earliest discs from that label by Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie, SIDEWAYS balances absorbing motifs, chilled-out textures, and flowing, probing solos. Trumpeter Mathias Eick evokes the mellow, cerebral styles of Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and ECM vet drummer Jon Christensen is, as expected, perfect.
Second album by Norwegian/American guitarist Jacob Young features the working band first heard on "Evening Falls", a group established to reflect the compatible styles and ideas of three generations of Norwegian jazz players.
Photographer: Colin Eick.
Personnel: Jacob Young (guitar); Vidar Johansen (bass clarinet, tenor saxophone); Mathias Eick (trumpet); Mats Eilertsen (double bass); Jon Christensen (drums).
Recording information: Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway (05/2006).
| | Bobby Hutcherson Head On CD (1971) Bonus Tracks
Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$9.99 HEAD ON (1971) is the most ambitious and adventurous work in Bobby Hutcherson's discography. Though the composer/bandleader/vibraphonist did contribute one tune ("Mtume"), HEAD ON mostly features the ambitious compositions and arrangements of Todd Cochran, who also plays piano on the session. The resulting music is dense and polyrhythmic, and bracing, drawing parallels to Miles Davis's BITCHES BREW and other first wave fusion albums.
Cochran arranges for the 18-piece group here with a mad scientist's zeal but still manages to create precise orchestral textures. Elements of chamber music and funk abound, and Hutcherson's clear, cool marimba and vibraphone work shimmers throughout. This release marks the album's first appearance on CD, giving Hutcherson fans reason to rejoice.

Hovhaness: Khaldis; MT. Katahdin; Fantasy
$15.59 Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is world renowned as a leading centre in the contemporary performing arts. Focussing exclusively on the cutting edge, this institution continues to be a powerful force in shaping contemporary culture. Over the past 30 years, The Kitchen has recorded all performances staged there. In 1999 an initiative was undertaken to catalogue and re-master the entire archive. During this process, an additional trove of recordings from the seventies was discovered featuring the likes of Cage, Laurie Anderson and David Tudor. A collaborative partnership with the Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass's label Orange Mountain Music has led to the restoration of these tapes, resulting in the release of the first in a series of CDs from this fascinating source. This initial release features performances from the ground-breaking New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, staged from June 8-16 1979.
