The Detroit Cobras manage a pretty rare feat with their debut LP by transcending classic R&B material by sticking not to the original sound or slavishly recreating arrangements and stylistic trappings of the genre, but by finding the essence of the rough-and-tumble spirit of the original streetwise tunes the Cobras tackle on Mink Rat. That they've chosen as their material obscure R&B nuggets from such legendary labels as Fortune Records and tunes from the glory days of regional hits and AM radio (with the left-field cover of the Oblivians' "Bad Man" here titled "Bad Girl") only aids and abets their efforts to make this material uniquely their own. Led by rhythm guitarist Steve Shaw, the Cobras are so tight, instrumentally, that they're loose. The sound, in modern terms, is dirty garage rock, but emboldened by a sense of rhythm that eludes most trash rock and punk-leaning outfits. But, really, what the Detroit Cobras peddle is rock & roll, just as raw and funky as it was originally intended. Shaw may lead the instrumental charge, but it's vocalist Rachel Nagy that steals the show. With a limber, husky voice that recalls Peggy Lee gone to seed and chain-smoking while standing on a Detroit street corner, Nagy is soulful without resorting to histrionics. Instead, she infuses her treatment of the material with an alluring bad-girl bravado and a feral sultriness. Always one step away from falling apart, the Detroit Cobras manage to hang together long enough to keep the house party vibe rolling from track to track. A fitting tribute to the spirit of rock& roll and a reason to go dig through the crates to hear the originals. ~ Chris Handyside

Mink Rat Or Rabbit Music Review
Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) OLD SCHOOL TYME This CD was very nice to listen to. It could almost be redone for todays listeners. It is a classic. I enjoyed listening to it ,very much. I bought it because of the cover,I hadn't seen one like that since Jimi Hendrix had one with 19 nudes on it,called "Electric Ladyland" (English version). It is really worth listening to. Own This CD or Leave My Planet NOW!!!! Probably the single hippest band currently out there today. If you're lucky to see there live shows, you'll find an amazingly tight band with an extremely charismatic singer who can get the crowd whipped up into a frenzy and make the staunchest conservative uptight knuckle dragging a-hole get up and dance. One of the very few bands IMHO that I can say is much better live than recorded. Ok, so this really isn't a review of this CD, but more of the band. so what are you waiting for??? BUY THIS CD NOW!!!!! Submitted by misfits_phreek666 (Portland, OR) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
amazing the detroit cobras, "mink, rat or rabbit", is hands down one of the most original albums i've heard. first of all, the way this album was recorded in a manner that made the album seem straight out of the late 50's, early 60's. then blending a mix of old r&b with a garage rock twist, gave this album a very "greaser" style rock and roll edge that makes it feel so dangerous. the lead singer in which i have no idea what her name is, has such a smokey, soulful voice, it's almost as if betty page was still alive and she started a really good rock and roll band. the upbeat swing of "breakaway", to the cocky swaggert of "cha cha twist", if you love rock and roll, rockabilly, old soul, dirty garage, or indie rock, please do yourself a favor and buy this album. you'll fall in love instantly and you'll never be able to take this cd out of your player. you won't be dissapointed.
