Take the apocalyptic, electronics-tinged riff-rock of bands like Korn. Subtract the fratboy sensibility and the Red Hot Chili Peppers-derived hip-hop rhythms. Add a sophisticated sense of melody and harmony, a more optimistic lyrical outlook, ... Full Descriptionand a sense of dynamics. You've essentially got the Incubus sound. Incubus practices the kind of rapid intra-song mood shifts that were Nirvana's trademark, but instead of merely going from soft to loud and back, they change stylistically, switching from full-on hard rock to almost jangly, low-key alt-rock. The resultant sound should appeal to fans of both styles. The tasteful application of electronic effects updates the feel of MAKE YOURSELF nicely. There's plenty of teeth-gnashing and shrieking angst to be found in the lyrics, but there's hopefulness and pop-friendly catchiness as well. In the world of late-'90s radio rock, Incubus seems capable of being all things to all people.
Incubus: Brandon Boyd, Mike Einziger, Jose Pasillas II, DJ Kilmore, Dirk Lance.
Additional personnel: Dave Holdridge (cello); Cut Chemist. Nu-Mark (scratches).

Alternative Press (1/00, p.88) - 3 out of 5 - "...a stylish attempt to merge...metal-edged riff-rock with hip-hop turntable aesthetics....reveals a band with more [brains] than...balls...." CMJ (11/1/99, p.26) - "...a fresh and sassy new amalgam....[Incubus] still rock the night away, but they've mellowed out considerably on the smooth-movin' MAKE YOURSELF." The Essential Incubus If you are new to the world of Incubus music, pick up this album. This is by far their best album with Morning View right behind it. You WILL NOT be disappointed in it; every song is one you can listen to over and over Submitted by dfx866 (Marathon, WI) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Great effort I've always held Incubus in high esteem for there ability to try new things and be good at it... its no different hear. The lyrics, the music and vocals are all superior. They somehow mesh loads of genres into the songs make it sound outstanding. "Privilege", "Stellar", "Drive", and "Pardon Me" are the top five best songs on this album. Great music. | | Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication CD (1999)
Make Yourself CD music
$15.65 "Scar Tissue" won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. CALIFORNICATION was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Album. "Scar Tissue" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
"Californication" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and for Best Rock Song.
CALIFORNICATION finds The Red Hot Chili Peppers once again in the more straightforward punk-funk mode of BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIK. This return to their original sound also marks the return of prodigal son John Frusciante, who takes over for his replacement, Dave Navarro. The Chili Peppers fill CALIFORNICATION with material shaped by personal and professional turmoil, resulting in a somewhat more sensitive approach than one might expected from a band whose hard-core following are skate-punks and drunken frat-boys. Songs such as "Otherside," "Scar Tissue" and "This Velvet Glove" overflow with background harmonies, while Frusciante's unadorned guitar provides support for Anthony Kiedis' emotive singing and broken-hearted lyrics.
The title track is one of the most impressive songs this quartet has written--It tells a tale of wandering souls who've lost their way searching for the American Dream in California. This sensitive showing does nothing ...
| | Korn Issues CD (1999)
Make Yourself music CDs
$7.59 The music of Korn speaks to those on the fringes of society. The band's trademark hip-core has evolved into a more clearly defined but equally urgent musical vision. Korn's sense of musical urgency and its ambition to make its mark on music is furthered with ISSUES.
"Beg for Me" is a track likely to incite the swirling pits at the band's legendary live shows. Showing that the group hasn't lost its down-to-earth sensibility, Korn invited fans to compete for the cover art of ISSUES, releasing versions featuring the winning piece as well as the efforts of three finalists. The emotional journey undergone by vocalist Johnathan Davis on tracks like "Hey Daddy" is truly strengthened by his movement away from his more abrasive vocal style and toward a more dominantly melodic approach. Davis ...

Make Yourself songs
$9.29 Additional personnel includes: Joel Derouin, Marion De Leon (violin); Evan Wilson, Karie Prescott (viola); Larry Corbett (cello); Jon Clarke (winds); Dawn Beckman (background vocals).
MORNING VIEW was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Engineered Album (Non-Classical).
Incubus is ready to pave its own way in the modern rock scene. With the brooding and crunchy musical themes of MORNING VIEW, it's almost hard to imagine that the album was written and recorded in the relaxed atmosphere of a California beach house. Drummer Jose Pasillas offers tasty percussive coloring in the breakout single, "Wish You Were Here." The song's trippy verses set against its heavily strummed choruses fits the profile of push-and-pull dynamics that Incubus fans have come to expect. "11am" touches on regret and indecision with some neo-Eastern flavor and Mike Patton-inspired vocalizing by frontman Brandon Boyd. "Float" borrows from traditional Asian music and shows the band's near-fearless spirit of experimentation. MORNING VIEW's most eccentric track is the crafted epic "Just A Phase," whose quirky time signature changes ...

| | Sylvain Sylvain Sleep Baby Doll... CD (1998)
Make Yourself CD music
$17.09 Syl Sylvain was the "normal" one in the New York Dolls, the guy who didn't wear a dress, and who looked like his favorite band was the Beatles. That's one reason why his solo records, which are probably the best by any ex-Doll, are so obscure: lacking David Johansen's style and Johnny Thunders' excess, Sylvain doesn't have an image hook.
He has musical hooks in spades, though, as this 1998 album shows. Less power-poppy than some of his earlier records--though "Hungry Girls" and "Oh Honey" would feel right at home on a Smithereens album--(SLEEP) BABY DOLL is an often-intense straightforward rock & roll album, with the nervy "Paper Pencil and Glue" and the atmospheric title track among the many standouts. The handful of Dolls covers, including respectful versions of Johansen's "Frenchette," and Thunders' "Your Society Makes Me Sad," pay tribute more than exploit.
Sylvain Sylvain is a true originator. As guitarist and songwriter for the legendary New York Dolls, Sylvain helped influenced a generation of punk and glam rockers. After the demise of the New York Dolls, Sylvain went onto a solo career. On his own, Sylvain continues the tradition he started in the Dolls. SLEEP BABY DOLL is a great transition record, taking the best from his past and bridging the musical gap to the ...
