With one album, this self-titled first release, bass phenomenon Jaco Pastorius was catapulted into the position of the greatest electric bass player that ever lived. Officially discovered by Blood, Sweat & Tears drummer Bobby Colomby, Jaco's revolutionary use of the bass as a solo instrument made him one of the most compelling instrumentalists of the electric era. Indeed, this record marked a turning point in the history of music--from the period before Jaco Pastorius and the period since.
It is the first track, Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee," that did it all. Accompanied only by conga drums, Jaco proceeds to ferociously tear through the intricate melody and then produce several choruses of stunning solos like no one had ever heard. From machine gun-like staccato lines to deep space harmonics, his command of the instrument is frightening. Pastorius is joined by R&B heroes Sam & Dave for a rousing reading of the funky "Come On, Come Over." Also included on this treasure are cherished works like the expressive "Continuum," the poetic solo "Portrait of Tracy," and the fiery "(Used to be a) Cha-Cha." In all, more than a stunning debut, this is a testament to Pastorius' legendary greatness.

Jaco Pastorius Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) A Must-Have For Any Bassist This album is a definite must-have for all bass players out there. This recording is over 25 years old, but it has been remastered and it sounds excellent. The two bonus tracks and extensive liner notes are a nice touch as well. Portrait Of Tracy, my favorite song on the album, is absolutely beautiful. Submitted by a reviewer (California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Historic This is one of the greatest recordings in music history and proves, track by amazing track, why Jaco Pastorius, almost 20 years since his murder is still heralded as the best electric bassist ever! This album encompasses the full range of jazz ( and some r&b too- "Come On, Come Over").
Jaco opens with Charlie Parker's "Donna Lee" and plays the complex melody, the harmony, and the solo with only scant percussion accompanyment and no overdubbs! In fact, Jaco uses no bass overdubbs on the whole album! It's like he thought it was cheating. Submitted by St.Davey (Windham, Me.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
"The Late World's Greatest Bass Player" This is his debut recording as a leader
with 2 bonus tracks and additional liner
notes as well as remastered from the
original. A classic recording that needs to be in every serious jazz col-
lector's library. Immense talent that is
incredible for a debut recording. The
remastered sound isn't bad either. Submitted by wdsjcs (Louisville, Ky, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jaco Pastorius
$6.39 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch of pianist Bill Evans, the electrifying presence of Coltrane and Cannonball--that some thirty-plus years after its initial release, KIND OF BLUE is still recognized as Davis' point of departure towards jazz's less-explored regions.
Bill Evans' translucent chords and Paul Chambers' famous bass line herald the revolution that is "So What": Davis and Evans' taut, coiled lyricism stands in sharp relief to the saxophonists' labyrinthine ...

Jaco Pastorius
$6.75 Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Probably the best fusion album ever made, and the coming together of five precociously talented musicians. Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter assembled the unit with little knowledge that the complex music would become so accessible. Two compostions stand out; the graceful 'A Remark You Made', an evocative love song without words, and the hit single 'Birdland' (so successful it was even used by Akai for a major advertising campaign). On these two Zawinul compostions their genius bass player Jaco Pastorius gives a taste of what he was capable of. He bent the notes to make them talk, and that high octave solo on 'Birdland' is still a treasured moment.

| | Jaco Pastorius Word Of Mouth CD (1981)
Jaco Pastorius
$10.39 WORD OF MOUTH was Jaco Pastorius' the first solo group recording, and it does a good deal to substantiate the widely held claims concerning the bassist's genius and wizardry. As a technician, Pastorius was untouchable, and his radical, melodic approach (he seems to play both rhythm and lead at once) forced a generation of bassists to reconceptualize their relationship to the instrument.
Pastorius' skills are on full display on this recording, as shown by the first cut, "Crisis," which lives up to the feeling of its ...
| | Herbie Hancock Maiden Voyage CD (1965)
Jaco Pastorius
$9.35 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of MAIDEN VOYAGE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
Probably the best in Herbie Hancock's series of fine Blue Note albums from the 60s, Maiden Voyage finds him in what is basically the Miles Davis band of the time, with Miles replaced by the young Freddie Hubbard. Hancock has always been a fine composer, but Maiden Voyage contains two classic compositions in particular - the beautiful `Dolphin Dance', and the atmospheric and popular title track. Saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams play as well throughout as they have ever played, and the whole record is marked with a timeless freshness ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Jaco Pastorius
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also ...

By 1963, when LIVE AT BIRDLAND was recorded, the John Coltrane Quartet had evolved into the finest working band in all of jazz, achieving an extraordinary balance of freedom and form, visceral intensity and romantic sensitivity. Each member was an innovator in his own right. From McCoy Tyner's powerful orchestrations, to bassist Jimmy Garrison's indomitable pulse and Elvin Jones' telepathic polyrhythms, this was a thrilling group at a peak of wonder and discovery.
Jones' dancing 6/8 pulse and elemental barrage of tom and cymbal colors make the quartet sound like a big band on their exciting version of "Afro-Blue." Tyner's rocking two-handed rhythms and original chordal voicings bring the tune's melodic strains to a fine boil, when Trane re-enters with a screaming, rhythmically challenging solo. The saxophonist approaches "I Want To Talk About You" as a virtuoso ballad vehicle, and the contrast between dense rhythmic/harmonic ideas and simple melodic eloquence bring this performance to an earthy emotional peak. The dancing polyrhythms which announce "The Promise" suggest how far the quartet had reshaped the basic 4/4 rhythm of jazz. Tyner's left hand keeps the pulse churning, as he uncoils swift, graceful single-note leads and ...
