15 years before Tony Bennett made the Great American Songbook safe for the MTV generation, there was Willie Nelson's STARDUST, one of the greatest "crossover" albums in history. The concept was simple: Willie singing a select group of familiar standards by composers such as Carmichael, Berlin, Weill, Ellington, the Gershwins, all in his familiar and inimitable style. Yet the result is not a quite a country treatment of these tunes. For one thing, the great R&B organist Booker T. Jones produced the session in addition to performing with Nelson's superb band featuring the estimable Mickey Raphael on harmonica. One of the enduring pleasures of STARDUST is the interplay between hushed organ, keening harmonica and Nelson's own stately gut-string guitar as well as his beautifully measured, plaintive singing.
This is part of Legacy's American Milestones series.

Stardust Music Review
Average Rating: (4.4 out of 5 stars) List All 7 Reviews One of the All-Time Greatest Albums This album proved once and for all that Willie Nelson was a great singer, not just a good country western singer. By reviving these Great hits from the past, Willie Nelson revived his own career back in the Eighties. The title track, "Stardust," and "Georgia On My Mind," are sung the way Hoagie Carmichael intended them to be sung. Every song on this album is a masterpiece. Highest rating. Timeless One of Willie Nelson's most sincere albums, Stardust is, of all Willie's records, my favorite. Willie and his band use simple instrumentation to bring out the beauty of these standards of American songwriting. Willie sings in an honest and heartfelt style making this recording a true classic. Willie sprinkles "Stardust" on us again! This CD was a replacement for the LP I bought when Stardust was first released back in 1981. The effect at that time was great, now it's beyond any words of description. "Stardust" from Willie is inspired and brilliant. Anyone with a passion and soul for love and music owes it to himself or herself to possess this incredible album.
