PROMISE, Sade's 1985 follow-up to her phenomenally successful debut, has the same breezy, sophisticated R&B approach as DIAMOND LIFE, sounding like a cross between light jazz and a low-key nightclub set of torch songs. Sade's detached, understated vocals are the epitome of cool, and while her technical range is limited--her performances are never about pyrotechnics--her elegant style creates a seductive mood. PROMISE heightens these effects with crisp production, gently interlocking keyboard and guitar lines, and washes of percolating rhythm, creating a textured landscape for Sade's vocals to soar over.
PROMISE contains the gently grooving "The Sweetest Taboo," one of Sade's most instantly recognizable songs, and "Never As Good as the First Time," another pop and R&B chart hit. There is rarely a misstep on the album, as it alternates between subdued grooves and chilly ballads (most notably the melancholic, minor-key "Jezebel"), keeping the musical vibe varied but quiet, and the overall atmosphere low-lit and intimate. Even more successful than its predecessor, PROMISE went triple platinum, and secured Sade's place as a pop sensation.

Promise Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Beautiful Voice I had the album version of this before CD'S even came out. Sade is one of my favorite singers. I recently saw her in concert here in Chicago, and she is one of the few singers who can "sing", without all of the "pomp and circumstance". When she sings it sounds exactly the way the CD sounds. Today that is very rare. Submitted by tonia.dye (Chicago, IL ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
an album of eden 5.1 stars this is the altogether the most romantic, thoughtful, idyllic album i've ever heard. Listen to it when you're relaxing on holiday or near the beach. its sounds are in-keeping with the rush of the breeze in an exotic get-a-way place. A great lover's album, the songs here are sheer ecstacy, like the passionate "fear" and sensual "war of the hearts". And I've never heard of anything anything cooler than "Maureen"! With her smooth, smoky, soul-pop sound and elegant image, Sade became a ubiquitous figure in the mid 1980s, turning out hit after hit with her first three albums. After an unusually long gap of four years, she delivered the final album of her career's initial phase, LOVE DELUXE.
None of the songs here radically depart from the style Sade established on her earlier recordings; ...

Rhino's 2001 collection, The Very Best of Howard Hewett, is a terrific collection, containing a generous 16 tracks that span not only his solo hits, but "Heaven Sent You," the Stanley Clarke tune he sang lead on, plus two songs that he sang for in Shalamar ("This Is for the Lover in You," "Somewhere There's a Love"). For most listeners, this is all the Hewett that's necessary, and by adding these unofficial Hewett recordings to the repertoire, they've made this the kind of record that's essential for most of the non-dedicated Hewett fans. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Brotherhood Of Man United We Stand CD (1994)
Promise music CDs
$14.35 Tony Hiller assembled Brotherhood of Man as his own spin on the 5th Dimension, or perhaps the Southern California soft pop of Roger Nichols. Either way, Hiller's Brotherhood of Man -- a coed group of professional singers top-lined by studio pro Tony Burrows (later a singer with the First Class, among many other studio-bound bubblegum sensations) and Sue & Sunny, a pair who had a single prior to this group, backed by anonymous Brit session men -- are a prime example of how peace and love were turned into MOR fodder at the turn of '60s, and not necessarily in an unpleasant way. With all these layered harmonies, sweetly trilling strings, and soft insistent melodies, United We Stand is the furthest thing from unpleasant, even if there is a heavier than expected quotient of fuzz guitars that give this a swinging mod sheen lacking from some of the squarer SoCal sounds. Not that United We Stand is hip -- looking back, it seems impossible that anyone above 12 or under 30 was sucked into this -- but it does unwittingly capture its time with its fuzz tones, paisley harmonies, and songs about singing in the sunshine as you love one another in the land of love. Yes, the songs on United We Stand are that cheerfully over the top, sometimes seeming like latter-day parodies of hippie homogenization, but the chief attributes of the record are Hiller's lush production and happily commercial melodies, which really do help make this a prime piece of pop archeology. That's not the same thing as making the album good, but this is a rare album from a studio-crafted one-hit wonder where the album tracks actually follow through effectively on the sound of the hit.
The 2008 RPM reissue offers even more soft pop hits, as it adds 13 bonus tracks to the original 11-track album. All these are singles that followed the release of the LP, including the six songs issued as Sue & Sunny ...
