Morcheeba is a band with all its bases covered. Brothers Ross and Paul Godfrey pull in opposite directions, with Ross handling the more organic range of instrumentation, from guitar to Hammond organ, while Paul takes care of programming and turntable work. Add to that formula the self-ordained "Sound Surgeon" Pete Norris and the cool, ethereal voice of singer Skye Edwards, whose quiet self-assurance provides a meeting ground for the eclectic sonic amalgam that is Morcheeba's BIG CALM.
Burbling analog synths and gritty slide guitar dominate on "Part Of The Process," setting the pace for the wild diversity of sounds to follow. Serene keyboards and buzzing drum samples provide the unique backdrop for the timeless melody of "Blindfold." Lush string arrangements and beautiful fingerpicked guitar grace the close harmonies and confessional lyrics of "Over And Over." Powerful string orchestration also lifts the ballad "Fear And Love." "Friction" features a deep reggae groove, a horn section and chatting by Spikey T.
Additional personnel includes: Spikey T (spoken vocals); Pierre Le Rue (fiddle); Jimmy Hastings (flute); Gary Baldwin (Hammond B-3 organ); DJ First Rate, DJ Swamp (scratches); Joe Cooper (percussion, background vocals); Peggi Gayle, Graeme Kyle (background vocals).
Includes liner notes by The Gardener.

Spin (5/98, p.141) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Always a hippie groove band at heart, Morcheeba have responded impressively to trip-hop's AOR-ization with BIG CALM--possibly the most seamless mix of VH1 pop and DJ culture so far, and a joint that recalls the Mamas & the Papas as much as Portishead..." Vibe (4/98, p.142) - "...Ross and Paul's moody blend of hip hop and twangy guitar licks, coupled with Skye's sweetly angelic vocals, seep easily into your consciousness..." NME (Magazine) (4/11/98, p.39) - 8 (out of 10) - "...A widescreen collection, it aspires more to inspirational airborne pirouetting of the Beck and Cornershop variety than floating face down in the murky pond of trip-hop....They sound like they like life." modern music that doesn't jump in your face but rather eases itself into your consciousness.gorgeous vocals, fine instrumentation and appropriate production create an aural quality that lets the listener envision whatever the music makes him or her feel.standout cuts,"the sea" and "part of the process" well worth a listen Submitted by a reviewer (naples,fl) Was This Review Helpful? Dont Listen to This Guy The reason this cd is what it is is because of the mixing. The DJ makes this album unique in the fact that it's blending a mixture of styles (in the vocals) along with a mixture of styles (in the music) and the mixing/scratching/DJ'ing makes this a dope album Submitted by a reviewer (Tucson, Az) Was This Review Helpful? rest your bones right here Things seem to be getting better!
I'm refering to the fact that record companies may have started to wake up a bit and signing artists that produce music that previously I've had to look in the retro section of record shops to find that right vibe.
I'm not suggesting that Morcheeba are stealing any past relics, it's just they have a great knack for melody and lyrics.
Great idea guesting NOSAJ - not only should you buy this album, but while your there purchase "heavy load" by New Kindgdom - essential

All the fun of the Fair I hapened to be watching MTV at a friends and caught this group performing. Great style, clear pure singing. Then I bought this album.
If you like the female voice, SADE, country western mixed with eastern and current pop music. There is fun here, there are alot of great songs and a all too short instrumental.
My only irritation is the odd bow to the current practice of DJ record play.
I say buy this now! Submitted by a reviewer (sussex UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$7.59 When it comes to a genre as stylistically specific as pop-punk, bands generally aren't expected to progress much beyond the standard mix of raging guitars, speedy drumming, and high-pitched melodic vocals singing paeans to teen rebellion. With 2004's THE CHRONICLES OF LIFE AND DEATH, however, Good Charlotte confounds expectations by delivering a sprawling concept album that borrows from a variety of distinctly non-punk music. Opening with a spooky, orchestral piece that sounds like a mix of John Williams and Arvo Part, the disc races from Cheap Trick-esque power pop (the title track) to shoegazer-y angst-rock ("In This World [Murder]") to Rufus Wainright-like sensitive piano ballads ("The Truth"). On "I Just Wanna Live," the group even tries its hand at rap, rhyming over a groove that's half Snoop Dogg/half Happy Mondays. For all its seeming incongruity, however, the record never sounds messy, but rather emerges as the work of a band eager to expand the boundaries of both its chosen style and its own musicality. (Note: There are two versions of the album, each containing a different bonus track.)
Good Charlotte's popularity exploded in 2002, when the brash singles "Anthem" and "Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous" catapulted them to the top of the punk-pop heap. Once there they couldn't be stopped, at least in part because they endorsed their pop side as much as their punk-derived image. When naysayers tried pointing out the music's lack of substance, Charlotte's irascible core -- tattooed brothers Benji and Joel Madden -- challenged them with the issue of "Boys and Girls," a vacuous yet irresistibly fizzy new wave-styled goof. Chronicles of Life and Death, Good Charlotte's first post-fame ...
