Pavarotti - Italian Wedding Favorites
$19.15 In addition to THE SOUL OF BEN WEBSTER, this compilation includes Harry Edison's GEE, BABY AIN'T I GOOD TO YOU and Johnny Hodges' BLUES A-PLENTY in their entirety.
Recorded in Hollywood, California and New York in 1957 and 1958. Originally released as three separate LPs on Verve (8359), (8211) and (6123). Includes liner notes by Francis Davis and original release liner notes by Benny Green and Nat Hentoff.
This two-CD set is slightly misnamed. Not only does it feature the tenor stylings of the great Ben Webster, it also contains a full album by trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison called GEE, BABY AIN'T I GOOD TO YOU and altoist Johnny Hodges' full LP, BLUES A-PLENTY. Webster appears on Edison's album but does not play on all of Hodges'. In fact, he sits out on five of the eleven Hodges tracks.
The music itself is all quite memorable, featuring notables such as trumpeters Art Farmer and Roy Eldridge, pianists Oscar Peterson and Billy Strayhorn, and trombonist Vic Dickenson. Indeed, this album boasts many legends, and with this caliber of musicianship, you can't go wrong. Highlights include Webster's composition, "Ev's Mad" Sweets Edison's "Blues for Bill Basie," and Hodges' "Honey Hill." On the latter, Roy Eldridge reaches into the stratosphere, playing high notes with great precision.

Pavarotti - Italian Wedding Favorites
$7.59 20 pop songs recorded in Italian, or at least in English with heavily Italian-oriented themes, for RCA in the 1950s and 1960s. This is Italian (or Italo-American) pop at its most middle-of-the-road and sentimental, which could serve as either a recommendation or a warning. Includes selections by Lou Monte, Perry Como, Sergio Franchi, Domenico Modugno (the massive hit "Volare"), and even a number by Sophia Loren, among others. ~ Richie Unterberger
Includes liner notes by Mike Omansky.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

| | Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson CD (1959)
Pavarotti - Italian Wedding Favorites
$10.89 On this 1959 date, Webster teams up with the Oscar Peterson Trio (Ray Brown, bass, and Ed Thigpen, drums) and some very luscious, at times brilliant, music is the result. Webster's deeply emotional renditions of "When Your Lover Has Gone" and "In the Wee, Small Hours of the Morning" are testament to Webster's ability to capture the essence of a tune and put his inimitable stamp on it. Indeed, there are very few tenor saxophonists who can truly duplicate Webster's feel for a ballad, nor come up with anything that tops it.
Peterson is in top form on this release as well. He plays ballads with great restraint, sensing that the best way to accompany this tenor legend is by staying out of his way. However, on the one uptempo track, "Sunday," Peterson takes the reigns playing a technically virtuosic solo that harks back to both Art Tatum (his mentor) and embraces modern bebop stylings. Finally, Ed Thigpen's superb brush work adds the finishing touches to what amounts to a truly enjoyable mainstream jazz listen.
Digitally remastered by Chris Herles (PolyGram Studios).
Recorded at United Recorders, Hollywood, California on November 6, 1959. Originally released on Verve (6114). Includes original liner notes by Stephen Frostberg and reissue liner notes by Kevin Whitehead.

$6.39 | | An An Evening With Il Divo: Live In Barcelona CDs (2009) With DVD
Pavarotti - Italian Wedding Favorites
$15.17 A live performance available as either a BluRay or a DVD/CD set, Live in Barcelona captures Il Divo's April 3, 2009, performance at Palau Sant Jordi. The video portions contain the complete 24-track performance; the CD is a truncated ten-cut sampler, designed as a bonus rather than the main attraction. That main attraction is the extravaganza captured on video, where the operatic quartet runs through all manners of pop standards -- "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Unbreak My Heart," "Nights in White Satin," "The Winner Takes It All," "My Way," "The Impossible Dream" -- sometimes translating the lyrics out of English so they feel more like opera. Naturally, this live set won't convince doubters, but those who have loved any of the group's five studio albums will find this a satisfying spectacle.
