| | John Coltrane Living Space CD John Coltrane Discography of CDs
Contains four tracks that originally appeared on the posthumous rarities compilation FEELIN' GOOD along with the previously unreleased "The Last Blues."
Digitally remastered using 20-bit technology by Eric Labson (MCA Music Media Studios).
These are sides recorded during a brief summer lull in the life of Trane's famed quartet, the majority of them issued previously on the albums INFINITY and FEELIN' GOOD. The album has the spacious intensity of Trane's latter-day compositions that jar, probe, and bend the horizontal and vertical dimensions of his earlier music while finding stability in the seasoned vigor of the band. "Living Space" appears without strings here, its melody overdubbed by Trane, in unison, on both tenor and soprano. It has the searching, mysterious quality of a mantra unlocking unseen doors, and recalls the waxing fire of A LOVE SUPREME'S "Resolution." "Untitled 90320" offers perhaps the most free environment of the five cuts, with McCoy hanging chordal fragments in thin air as Elvin sympathizes energetically with Trane's excursions into unexplored harmonic vistas. Think four dimensions or more.
This is part of Impulse's The New Thing series.

Living Space
$12.59 A studio precursor to the collective improvisations of MEDITATIONS, this suite, recorded a month before LIVE IN SEATTLE, represents the final shining examples of the interplay, sensitivity and excitement of the John Coltrane Quartet. On MEDITATIONS Trane would add drummer Rashied Ali and tenor saxophonist Pharaoh Sanders to the mix, creating a sonic vortex that represented powerful new directions. Soon after, both Tyner and Jones felt it was time to move on.
Unlike the cosmic explorations of SUN SHIP, FIRST MEDITATIONS displays the serene side of Coltrane's spiritual quest--the reflection and outreach of A LOVE SUPREME. The sweet trills of "Love" present Trane's tenor in an angelic light, as Garrison and Jones' shifting drone leads to a chanting Tyner epic. Likewise, "Compassion" proceeds from the gentle three against four rhythm of a Jones/Garrison stroll. Trane maintains his lyric focus throughout his dense repeated figures, before the sand-blasted overtones atop the curve of his phrase finally ...
| | John Coltrane Dear Old Stockholm CD (1965)
Living Space
$12.65 DEAR OLD STOCKHOLM gathers together studio sessions the Coltrane Quartet made with the great drummer Roy Haynes who was filling in for the remarkable Elvin Jones. "I always tried to get him when Elvin Jones wasn't able to make it," Coltrane explained. The resulting studio sessions, now gathered together on one disc for the first time, paint an intriguing sonic alternative to the great Coltrane Quartet of the '60s.
Where Elvin Jones' is all rolling thunder and elemental energy, Haynes' polyrhythmic style is more stacatto and jagged. What both drummers had in common was an uncanny intuition for orchestrating Coltrane's epic melodic inventions, and setting up a freewheeling rhythmic counterpoint to his most complex passages. ...
| | John Coltrane Transition CD (1965)
Living Space
$9.65 Digitally remastered by Robert Stoughton (MCA Music Media Studios).
This posthumous release, recorded in June of 1965, is a perfect point upon which to delineate the TRANSITION between Coltrane quartet's golden age, and the book of revelations that followed. TRANSITION finds them on the stylistic fault line between the spiritual outreach of A LOVE SUPREME and the turbulent explorations of SUN SHIP. These performances are plenty intense, yet traditional matters of tune, tempo, tonality and time are still apparent, whereas two months later (SUN SHIP) the band was immersed in the spirit of exploration.
Trane's chanting theme to the title tune echoes elements of A LOVE SUPREME, while his development of this and other motifs foreshadows the deep contrasts between upper and lower registers he'd exploit so convincingly on MEDITATIONS. As always, Tyner holds the rumbling edifice together with dense block chords that reflect Trane's stunning flights, while his two-handed accents imply ...
| | John Coltrane Expression CD (1967)
Living Space
$12.15 Principally recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on February 15 and March 7, 1967. Includes liner notes by Nat Hentoff.
John Coltrane's work with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk, his roots in Charlie Parker and Dexter Gordon, and his mastery of traditional harmony granted him a musical license that other experimentalists such as Cecil Taylor and Ornette Coleman never enjoyed. They were always viewed as musical outsiders, whereas Coltrane's pedigree was beyond reproach. Which is why John Coltrane's death on July 17, 1967, a few months shy of his 41st birthday, was such a devastating shock to the jazz community. Coltrane had become a creative lightning rod for the new generation, and his music was synonymous with the liberating energy of the '60s. Upon his passing, a creative and spiritual void manifested itself, to be filled by cutting edge rockers such as Jimi Hendrix and Cream, and a new generation of electric jazzmen--spearheaded by many of his devotees and his old mentor, ...
| | John Coltrane Live In Seattle CDs (1966)
Living Space
$19.99 Recorded live at The Penthouse, Seattle, Washington on September 30, 1965. Includes liner notes by David Wild.
By the fall of 1965, when LIVE IN SEATTLE was recorded, John Coltrane was in the middle of a highly experimental period, searching for new means of expression, having seemingly exhausted his bebop and post-modern resources. Such niceties as tune, time and tempo were optional features on these free-form search parties. The freedom first hinted at that summer (TRANSITION and SUN SHIP) was now the primary focus of the music.
The music had become a reflection of John Coltrane's spiritual quest, as well as his study of non-western religions and the ritualistic music that often accompanied these solemn rites. The effect of adding young firebrands Donald Garrett and Pharaoh Sanders to his ensemble was catalytic. The enthusiasm of tenor maverick Sanders is contagious. On the sonic bookends "Cosmos" and "Evolution," Sanders' unique command of multiphonics, harmonics and blow-torched overtones gives the music a real vocal impetus. As if Trane needed one. On free interpretations of classics ...
