No Que Bueno Esta!
$12.25 SOUL OF THE TANGO received the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Classical Crossover Album." 'Tango Remembrances' was nominated for the Award for "Best Instrumental Composition."
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has branched out a lot in recent years, collaborating with artists from Bobby McFerrin to Bela Fleck, and this recording represents yet another way that Ma has single-handedly expanded the repertoire and opened our ears and minds to a new type of music. Ma states that the tango is a dance full of undercurrents, and in combination with many of the musicians that Piazzolla himself played with, he seems to slip easily between tango-inspired reverie and serious, almost murderously rhythmic dance.
Ma's enthusiasm for this Argentinean art form is audible in the dynamism he brings to each track. One of the most interesting tracks on the CD is "Tango Remembrances," in which Ma plays improvisational material and a walking bass composed over pre-recorded material played by Piazzolla himself on the bandoneón (basically an Argentinean accordion). This music seems to throb with emotion, and never is Piazzolla's artistry more obvious than in his own performance.
This recording has a sensuousness to it like the first taste of a rich dessert. Save room for this one!

| | David Russell Reflections Of Spain - Spanish Guitar Favorites / Russell CD (2002)
No Que Bueno Esta!
$15.05 David Russell is a remarkably talented guitarist who captivates listeners with his precision, poise, and technical fluency. His playing is informed by a keen musical intelligence and his astute performances are notable for their attention to detail, and insights that suggest a deep understanding of the music. With REFLECTIONS OF SPAIN, Russell offers a straightforward program of some of the most well known pieces of the Spanish guitar repertory, which ably demonstrate the extraordinary dimensions of his talent.
Russell's own arrangements of works by Enrique Granados and Isaac Albéniz maintain their idiomatic flavor and musical integrity while providing ample opportunities to display his superb technique. His elegant, flawless accounts of evocative masterworks such as "Andaluza," "Sevilla," and "Asturias," among others, are models of understated virtuosity and brilliant musicianship. Russell's playing throughout projects a sense of adventure, and even old favorites such as "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" sound vibrant and fresh under his nimble fingers. REFLECTIONS OF SPAIN is a well-conceived presentation of six-string artistry at its finest.

| | Eduardo Fernandez Between Two Worlds / Eduardo Fernández CD (2005)
No Que Bueno Esta!
$14.79 LABOR RECORDS RELEASESBETWEEN TWO WORLDSThe Latin, Folk, Classical and Pop worlds of guitaristEDUARDO FERNÃNDEZThe new Labor release from the great Uruguayan guitarist Eduardo Fernández ranges from the great masters of South American music – classical and folk – to the Beatles and George Gershwin. According to Fernández, no instrument is better qualified than the guitar, with its double citizenship, to cross the borders between popular, folk and classical music. And no musician is better positioned to make the point than this enormously talented guitarist. His recording is both a personal homage to the freedom to cross borders and a celebration of the instrument that makes it possible. From the great folk guitarist-composers of Argentina, Brazil and Colombia to modern masters like the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos, the Argentinian Alberto Ginastera and the Cuban Leo Brouwer, from the guitarist’s own arrangements of the Beatles to Brower’s evocation of Afro-Cuban ritual to duet arrangements and performances of Gershwin and Ginastera by Carlos Barbosa-Lima, Fernández shows everywhere the kind of mastery, ease and command of a wide range of idioms that tears down borders and fences. Fernández was born in Uruguay in 1952 and began studying the guitar at the age of 7. His recorded repertoire is phenomenal; 31 recordings are currently listed for companies such as Erato, Denon, Arte Nova, Oehms Classics and English Decca, a label for which he has made 18 recordings. He has recorded Bach lute suites, music of Luciano Berio, most of Paganini’s music for guitar and violin, romantic works for guitar and guitar duets.REVIEW / Oakland TribuneThoroughly inspiring music from master guitaristsRecorded in Puerto Rico over five years, this solo disc finds Uruguayan guitarist Fernandez between "two worlds" --classics and popular, both of which are completely suited to the acoustic guitar. He plays passionately melodic solos by Augustin Barrios Mangore, Juan Falu, Leo Brou

| | Kailash Kher Yatra (Nomadic Souls) CD (2009) Nomadic Souls; Digipak
No Que Bueno Esta!
$10.69 Where much of the Bollywood genre is formulaic, poppy, and seemingly manufactured, Kher reveals a tendency for vastly more soul, as he does on YATRA. His songs crafted, his vocals taking from Hindustani classical forms (dhrupad, most notably) and Sufi qawwal, there is perhaps more Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in his voice than there is Mohammed Rafi (there's even a stray harmonium in "Kar Kar Main Haara"). The result is a surprising one: the songs float, with mere hints of more modern traditions buried within more timeless sounds, the music grooves rather than bounces, and the backing vocalists sway and swoon rather than shout. With basic dance tracks, touches of bhangra, long and soulful ballads, and even a couple of outstanding bits of acoustic dance, YATRA has a little of everything and a few items that are entirely unexpected.
Lyricist: Kailash Kher.
Personnel: Kailash Kher (vocals); Tapas Roy (mandolin, oud, saz); Sunil Das (sitar); Naveen Kumar (flute); Jaipur Kawa Brass Band (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba).
