NO QUE BUENO ESTA contains 4 live tracks and a collection of Bamboleo songs remixed by DJs including Pistol Pete Lorimer and DJ Cubanito.
With the continued popularity of the Buena Vista Social Club, it seems that Cuban artists are in more demand than ever. If the polished skills of Bamboleo is any indication, the tiny island country still has plenty of great musical resources that have yet to be mined. Bamboleo specializes in a style known as timba -- a blend of jazz, salsa, soul, funk, and Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The first four tracks of Ño Qué Bueno Está, which were recorded live, are the album's highlight. The rich vocals of singers Vannia Borges and Yordamis M. Megret are a perfect counterpoint for the band's powerful, brass-filled arrangements. Unfortunately, the last six tracks of the album are mostly remixes of the group's other songs. For some reason, the album's producers feel the need to rely on DJ scratches and rapping to appeal to a new audience. If the Buena Vista Social Club has proven anything, it's that music fans want to hear Cuban musicians speak for themselves. It's too bad that this album doesn't understand that. ~ Jon Azpiri

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma has branched out a lot in recent years, collaborating with artists from Bobby McFerrin to Bela Fleck, and this recording represents yet another way that Ma has single-handedly expanded the repertoire and opened our ears and minds to a new type of music. Laura Pausini, a multilingual Italian pop singer who won a Latin Grammy in 2005 for Best Female Pop Vocal Album, decided to record an album of cover songs when she returned to the studio to record her follow-up effort. This is a fairly standard practice for pop/rock artists, of course, especially in the wake of a mammoth success like the one Pausini experienced with Resta in Ascolto (released concurrently in Spanish as Escucha in the Americas). Yo Canto (likewise released concurrently in Spanish) is a somewhat unusual covers album, however, for it's comprised of Italian pop/rock songs from the 1970s, '80s, and '90s -- few, if any, of which will be familiar to listeners across the Atlantic.
