| | Sy Klopps Blues Band Berkeley Soul CD Sy Klopps Blues Band Discography of CDs
Sy Klopps' Berkeley Soul starts off with a jumping blues ("Running Blue") before settling into a 1960s-type soul/R&B date that includes Marvin Gaye's "Wherever I Lay My Hat," Sam Cooke's "You Gotta Move," and Little Willie John's "Walk Slow," along with some more exuberant tunes. Klopps has an appealing and versatile voice, equally skilled on the heated material and the rock & roll-ish ballads. Recommended to listeners who enjoy 1960s crooners. ~ Scott Yanow

Berkeley Soul CD music
$7.79 Originally released on Argo (4003). Includes liner notes by Andy McKaie.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Music Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
When Etta James signed with Chess Records in 1960, the label decided to pair her raw, bluesy singing with a full backing band and lush orchestrations. AT LAST!, her Chess debut, shows the formula working to fine effect, as it highlights the singer's facility with different approaches including torchy balladry, jazz crooning, growling blues, and R&B shouting. She sounds equally at home on Willie Dixon stompers ("I Just Want To Make Love To You"), standards ("Stormy Weather"), and down-tempo soul workouts (the beautiful title track).

| | Savoy Brown Street Corner Talking CD (1971)
Berkeley Soul music CDs
$6.49 After 1970's Looking In album, Peverett, Roger Earl, and Tony Stevens left to form Foghat, leaving Kim Simmonds with yet another dilemma. But for Simmonds, things went a little smoother than he might have imagined, picking up piano player Paul Raymond, bassman Andy Silvester, and drummer Dave Bidwell, all from Chicken Shack. He also hired singer Dave Walker, who was the former frontman with the Idle Race, and together the new lineup recorded Street Corner Talking, one of Savoy Brown's finest moments. Gelling almost instantaneously, Walker's cozy yet fervent voice countered with Simmonds' strong, sturdy guitar playing, and an exuberant mixture ...

| | Ember Land Under Water CD (2005)
Berkeley Soul CD music
$18.99 Ember is an exciting, young duo with a love of music and travel. Over the last five years they have journeyed and played in Spain, Ireland, Holland, Wales, Mexico and the Western U.S., often allowing the wind to blow them where it will, other times settling down for a few months to focus on crafting new tunes. The simple yet moving music grows up around the miraculous blending of two very different voices: that of Welsh songstress Emily Williams, who also soars through the mix with her violin, and sets up chunky rhythms with her nylon-strung, and that of Rebecca Sullivan of Utah, who fingerpicks a sparkling steel-strung, and breaks out the ...
