Dirty Linen (4-5/00, p.64) - "...The 11 tracks survey classic regional Cuban jazz styles, including the Changu, the Guaracha...along with dance styles like the rhumba....The high energy performances and tight vocal arrangements make this another memorable foray into contemporary 'classic' Cuban music." $14.79 "A beautiful album so carefully crafted. Julia has clearly learned much from her experience as the 'band singer' with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, and her respect for these songs is so effectively communicated. Pure, straightforward, unadorned jazz-inflected popular singing. The world needs many more singers approaching these songs with the feeling and love expressed here." Pat Goodhope - "Sinatra and Company"AM 1290/WJBR Radio - Wilmington, DE"For the millions of fans around the globe of the world famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, the name will be a familiar one. But while the name and voice are familiar, Julia Rich's debut CD as a 'single' exposes a far greater depth of talent than is displayed on 3 or 4 numbers in front of the band during a concert. I love the big band charts she does with GMO, but it is the intimacy of the small group setting that gives her a chance to caress a ballad in a way that makes the listener feel like you're dancing, late in the evening, lights low, just a few couples on the floor, and she's singing in your ear, just to you."Tom Phillips - JAZZ NEWS"Wow!! A real treat. Every word, every song, sung with real feeling. It's been a long time. A long time between real singers. Anita, June, Chris, each one made each song their own. Add Julia to the list. ...

$17.05 Gaia (Gaea) 'guy-uh': 1) The Greek Earth Goddess and Mother of the Titans 2) The autopoietic superorganism that is the living biosphereconsort:'kan-soert: 1) one who shares a common lot 2) a ship accompanying another 3) spouse / lover 4) to make harmony 5) a group of singers or instrumentalists performing togetherGaia Consort sounds like a movie sound track for The Gathering of the Tribes. Imagine 1000 naked hippies in the woods, a huge bonfire and drums the size of smaller states, ringing through the night. Add to that some intelligent lyrics about evolution, sex and sensuality, engaging the natural world, and then throw in a string trio. Imagine filming The Graduate at Woodstock. Imagine Ian Anderson dropping acid with Peter Gabriel and mixing So with Thick as a Brick.Christopher Bingham and Sue Tinney got themselves booked into Nudestock 97 and announced the new name, played some of the new stuff, and the crowd was on it's feet when they finished playing. They were doing something right. In 1999 and 2001 the Consort released Gaia Circles and Secret Voices to critical acclaim in all the major Pagan magazines and a fair number of "mainstream" music journals as well. "Evolve" saw them on the Cover NeWitch Magazine, and expanded their audience substantially.Their next CD, "Vitus Dance", will be available in stores summer 2007. Vitus Dance moves Gaia Consort into a more groove oriented collecvtion that springs from Bingham's love of hallucinogenic music of the early 70s. All still withn the framework of an expanding Gaian Culture. Friends and fans donated over $15,000 by "adopting" songs to help Gaia Consort record the disc. All of Gaia Consort's music is as much a product of a supportive community as it an individual vision.Backing Bingham and Tinney are some of the Pacific Northwest's finest musicians. Gaia Consort's current line up includes Larry Golding on violin, Sunnie Reed on viola, TJ Morris on drums, Jay Kenney on keyboards, Betsy Tinney on cello and Dan Mohler on bass.Guesting on this album is Trillian Green's amazing flautist, Ben Klein, Pint and Dales bansidhe hurdy gurdy-ist Felicia Dale, the wonderful Eliot Grasso on ulliean pipes and the fantasic background vocals of Pagan belter SJ Tucker.Gaia Consort has never been about making it big in the music "industry." Eschewing the usual venues of clubs and coffee houses, Gaia Consort has managed to quietly build an audience that fills rooms, playing house concerts and self-produced shows in halls around the Pacific Northwest. They've built enough of a following to have been invited to play a variety of festivals and events, including headlining the long running Heartland Pagan Festival (2000) in Kansas, Canada's Wic Can Fest (2002) outside Toronto and Eugene Oregon's Faerieworlds (2005,2006, 2007)Christopher Bingham's crystal clear tenor used to get compared to David Crosby but lately it's been Bare Naked ...
