Listen Now
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye, finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with only a few latter-day elements and rare experimental diversions. As such, deceptively simple guitar-shredding master classes like "This Day We Fight!," "1,320" (surprisingly, written about "funny car" racing), and first single "Headcrusher" are cut from the same bloody cloth as "Wake Up Dead" and "Set the World Afire," ...
| | Whitney Houston I Look To You CD (2009)
Listen Now
$13.65 Despite her star having lost some of its luster in the 2000s, Whitney Houston is still regarded as a benchmark for modern singers of all stripes (from soulful divas to would-be pop idols). Almost seven years in the making, 2009's I LOOK TO YOU marks a music industry homecoming for the singer. Supported by a mob of A-list producers and songwriters including Diane Warren, David Foster, R. Kelly, Alicia Keys, and many more, Houston's vocals are in fine form on material ranging from hip-hop-tinged contemporary R&B ("Million Dollar Bill") to `70s covers (Leon Russell's "A Song for You") to adult contemporary torch songs ("I Look to You").

| | Pearl Jam Backspacer CD (2009)
Listen Now
$23.69 Of all the bands to emerge from the early `90s grunge explosion, Pearl Jam was both the longest-lived and most consistently interesting. After several albums that found the group taking an increasingly experimental direction, the Seattle quintet returned to its straight-ahead hard rock roots with 2006's self-titled effort. In 2009 however, Pearl Jam surprised fans again with an album containing some of the unit's catchiest, poppiest songs ever. According to lead vocalist Eddie Vedder, most of the new material was written prior to recording, which was a significant departure from the group's usual in-studio jamming method of composition. The result is one of the unit's most focused and accessible works since the debut album TEN. The first single "The Fixer" (written my drummer Matt Cameron) is a Kiss-like bit of straight-up pop masquerading as hard rock, while "Just Breathe" is melancholy acoustic singer-songwriter music so sharply crafted it would fit well on an Jack Johnson album. Throughout, Pearl Jam performs with its trademark directness, mustering the kind of earthy, cohesive sound that only veteran bands can deliver.

| | Peter Case Sings Like Hell CD (1994)
Listen Now
$15.05 The amusing album cover obscures the fact that this is a "live in the studio" album. Produced by ex-Lone Justice member Marvin Etzioni--who put out a pair of excellent, overlooked solo albums as Marvin the Mandolin Man around this time--SINGS LIKE HELL consists of Case on guitar and piano, Etzioni on mandolin, a violinist, a drummer and a bassist, bashing out 13 new Case songs which crackle with energy, wit, narrative sophistication and good old-fashioned rock & roll heart.
Even given the mostly acoustic lineup ...
| | Minutemen What Makes A Man Start Fires? CD (1991)
Listen Now
$14.45 On their second full-length release, the Minutemen didn't stray too far from their original formula. The trio still deals in short, intensely played mini-songs here, although most of the 18 tracks last a minute or longer--roughly twice the average duration of songs on 1981's THE PUNCH LINE. Recorded over a year later, WHAT MAKES A MAN START FIRES has a couple of guitar overdubs, but the Minutemen maintain their stripped-down, unadorned sound and trademark gruff passion.
In a typical song, Boon's scrappy guitar playing and passionate vocal invective sit atop percolating funk rhythms. ...
| | Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain CD (1994)
Listen Now
$9.89 Tuneful without being soft, confident without being pompous, hip without being inaccesible, CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN was a huge leap for Pavement up the rock & roll evolution cycle. They may have gained some pop smarts, but a casual listen to the dissonant guitar solo of "Cut Your Hair" proves that the seeds planted with 1989's first SLAY TRACKS EP have come to their logical fruition.
Stephen Malkmus and co. created an album that neither short-changed their status as prominent indie noise-makers, nor stunted their growth as a musical ensemble. Thus, though the inspired eccentricity is toned down--an instrumental tribute to fellow Stockton-ite Dave Brubeck being the ...
