With SISTER, Sonic Youth moved even further from the self-conscious punk rock that marred their first releases, SONIC YOUTH (1982) and CONFUSION IS SEX (1983). Incorporating heavy echo effects--especially on bassist Kim Gordon's vocal turns like "Beauty Lies in the Eye"--and Steve Shelley's propulsive and nuanced drumming, SISTER shows the band refining its signature sound with vocal harmonies and great slabs of rusty guitar. The sound developed by the band here helped shape the course of American independent rock.
"Catholic Block" creates fascinating tensions between its various instruments, using an almost hypnotic pulse during the verses, while the bridges devolve into near-freeform experimentation. The distorted foundation of "Cotton Crown" ebbs and flows, laying a base that gives the almost ballad-like song an epic feel that suggest it could go on forever--it is one of the band's best moments. The record concludes with an odd-ball bonus track, "Master-Dik," a bizarre "white-guy" rap from a 12" single that includes a lot of naughty words, in addition to Thurston Moore singing along with a short sample from the Rolling Stones "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." SISTER is a state-of-the-art rock album that shows no signs of aging--a classic.
Originally released on SST (134).
Sonic Youth: Thurston Moore, Lee Ranaldo (vocals, guitar); Kim Gordon (vocals, bass); Steve Shelley (drums).

Q (7/96, p.144) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...The New Yorker's masterpiece....erased the more indulgent bits from EVOL and concentrated Sonic Youth's talent for gently tortured rock; an emotive, inventive pre-grunge..." Alternative Press (p.200) - "[I]ts inventive arrangements and distressed guitar work are shockingly accessible-sounding..." Alternative Press (7/95, p.75) - Ranked #3 in AP's list of the `Top 99 Of '85-'95' - "...The focus here wasn't clear, it was city blocks and bits of old farms tied together with broken guitar strings and awesome noise. The band were trying as hard as they could, and they got ultimate beauty both uncontrollable and irreplaceable..." CMJ (1/5/04, p.20) - Ranked #13 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1987" Melody Maker (5/4/96, p.58) - "...The mid-period Sonic LPs, specifically SISTER and DAYDREAM NATION, are generally regarded as their most fully realised..." Sister album
$6.55 GOO was Sonic Youth's major label debut and allowed the band to blend its skewed sense of aesthetic and cultural criticism into a more understandable stab at pop culture. GOO unleashed the band's ability to create monster riffs out of fuzzy, unlikely tunings, while bringing their once aloof songwriting into a more pop-sensitive light.
GOO's stunning collection of material once again highlighted Sonic Youth's unique writing talents. "Dirty Boots" and "Mary Christ" showed Thurston Moore's delicious slant on rock melody. Yet it was Kim Gordon who stole the show with her chilling "Tunic (Song For Karen)" and the brilliant "Kool Thing."
In "Tunic," Gordon wrapped her cunning insight around the Karen Carpenter story: "I feel like I'm disappearing/Getting smaller every day/But I look in the mirror/And I'm getting ...

Sister CD music
$6.59 Combining Sonic Youth's first full-length release, 1983's CONFUSION IS SEX, with its followup EP, KILL YR IDOLS, this disc shows the New York noise-guitar quartet at their most uncompromising. Where 1982's self-titled EP sounded timid and too beholden to guitarists Thurston Moore and Lee Renaldo's mentor, composer Glenn Branca, these two releases combine Branca's methods--including bizarre tunings and guitars attacked with screwdrivers, vibrators ...

Sister music CDs
$6.55 Coming as it did in the midst of the mid-80s "roots rock" trend, the title of Sonic Youth's second full-length album (cribbed from John Fogerty) and its strangely evocative front cover photo of a burning pumpkin-headed scarecrow, BAD MOON RISING almost ...
| | Sonic Youth E.V.O.L. CD (1986)
Sister songs
$6.55 On E.V.O.L. ("love" spelled backwards), Sonic Youth honed the sparkle and chaos that permeated their sound. The shimmering "Tom Violence" affirmed, not only in name, their ability to be dangerous, while the haunting "Shadow Of A Doubt" secured Kim Gordon's position as one of rock's most intriguing monologue artists. The loping "In The Kingdom #19" invoked the beat era and Andy Warhol's "Car Crash" series ("smoke and flames, all right!"), giving the song a warped sense of originality and humor.
E.V.O.L. was also the precursor to Sonic ...

| | Sonic Youth Washing Machine CD (1995)
Sister CD music
$7.19 WASHING MACHINE features an unlisted instrumental as track 9.
WASHING MACHINE returns Sonic Youth to the ringing electric guitars, clever songwriting and multi-layered arrangements that are the band's calling card. Not the casual acoustic sigh of its predecessor, EXPERIMENTAL JET SET, TRASH AND NO STAR, WASHING MACHINE's electricity gives Sonic Youth new life.
With its sprawling guitar noise, "The Diamond Sea" recalls the GOO-era "Mote," proving that the crunching metallic waves that once made Sonic Youth so impressive are back. "Junkie's Promise" trembles with ...
