The sophomore slump hit Urban Dance Squad rather hard, or maybe it just seemed that way based on the consistently high quality of their debut. Life 'n Perspective of a Genuine Crossover sounds aimless where its predecessor came off as shrewdly eclectic. It's not that there aren't great moments: "Careless" is nice mid-tempo hip-hop with a blues base, and the strangely named "(Thru) the Gates of the Big Fruit" showcases some great turntable work from DJ DNA as well as country-ish slide guitar from Tres Manos. But the four-part approach to "Life 'n Perspectives" is annoying and "Routine" goes nowhere. Somehow the high points aren't quite enough to carry the weight of the low ones. However, the "live in Tokyo" bonus disc that accompanies this reissue is more consistently rewarding. ~ Rick Anderson

Bluesy hard rock and boogie was still around in the early 1980s, even as hair metal started grabbing all the attention. One such British band, Fastway, was led by two veterans: Motorhead guitarist Fast Eddie Clarke and Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley. They recruited unknown singer and harmonica player David King and released their successful self-titled debut in 1983. A tribute mostly to the poppier, more bubblegum side of the '60s, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes' Blow in the Wind is a karaoke masterpiece, surprisingly the finest and punkest record they've released. The Gimme Gimmes' all-star punk rock cover band lineup, which includes members of NOFX, Lagwagon, and the Swingin' Utters, takes on mostly cheesy songs that baby boomer parents might get a kick out of, but which should make any self-respecting punks sick to their stomachs. For instance, the Gimme Gimmes somehow manage to take a dated hippie anthem like Cat Stevens' "Wild World" and make it rock like the holy jihad on the trail of a blasphemous author.
