| | Best Of Reggae Sunsplash CD
Recorded live at Reggae Sunsplash, Montego Bay, Jamaica on August 4th, 1982. Includes liner notes by Les Souci. Held annually in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Reggae Sunsplash is the world's largest reggae festival. This excellent CD offers a sampling of some of the 1982 Sunsplash's highlights and contains performances by big names like Toots & the Maytals, Mutabaruka, Yellowman, the Gladiators, the Mighty Diamonds and the Twinkle Brothers, all of whom are in good or excellent form. One thing The Best of Reggae Sunsplash shows is reggae's diversity -- Toots' exuberance ("Never Get Weary," "Beautiful Woman") is a long way from Mutabaruka's angry dub poetry ("Hard Times Love," "Drug Kulcha") and the dubwise of Yellowman ("Church in Session"), Brigadier Jerry ("Pain") and the quirky Eek-A-Mouse ("Neutron Bomb"/"Assassinator"). And on the Mighty Diamonds' "Right Time," one can hear why some admirers of classic African-American soul music also hold classic reggae in such high regard. This disc, released by a small and obscure label based in Silver Spring, MD, may be hard to find but would be well worth the search. ~ Alex Henderson

Best Of Reggae Sunsplash
$32.85 FOOD IN THE BELLY features poetry and shimmering instrumentals from Xavier Rudd's "musical journey." Surfer peacenik Xavier Rudd channels Dave Matthews, G. Love, and especially Paul Simon on his debut for Anti-, 2007's FOOD IN THE BELLY. The Australian singer-songwriter's amiable blend of percussive acoustic guitars, mellow grooves, and tasteful world-music accents ("Pocket of Peace" boasts a didgeridoo) is the perfect musical backdrop for Rudd's hushed, uplifting vocals. This album will surely appeal to crunchy college kids and eco-warriors searching for some positive vibes. As stereotypes go, a surfer with something worthwhile to say is a contradiction in terms, but Xavier Rudd is no cookie-cutter mold, but a singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist with simple, yet profound, thoughts on life to impart. Rudd opens Food in the Belly by taking stock of himself on "The Letter," a song bookended by the highly contemplative and autobiographical "September 24, 1999." Both lay the groundwork for his life-affirming philosophy that revolves around our connections to this wonderful planet, a theme explored on "Energy" and the paean to "The Mother" Earth, and reflected in the ecologically minded "Messages." In nature one can find a tranquility of soul that permeates this entire set, but that doesn't mean ...
| | Little Milton Stax Profiles CD (2006)
Best Of Reggae Sunsplash
$9.65 Personnel: Little Milton (vocals); Bobby Manuel (guitar); The Memphis Horns (horns); Lester Snell (keyboards); Big Joe Turner (bass guitar); Caleb Emphry, Al Jackson (drums). Though he had a patchy recording career, the guitarist and singer Little Milton was a master at performing slow blues, and it's this aspect of his music that is highlighted in this entry in the STAX PROFILES series. Classics like "Blue Monday," "Walking the Back Streets and Crying," and "Little Bluebird" (check out the remarkable extended vocal note just before the fade on the latter track) feature Milton's vocals at their finely expressive best, and while his guitar playing isn't as instantly recognizable as, say, B.B. King's or his fellow Stax label mate Albert King, it's creative, funky, and often stunningly subtle. Although Little Milton (Milton Campbell) is chiefly remembered for his fine Chess Records sides from the '60s, his stay at Stax Records in the early '70s saw him expand his palette with horns and strings in a more soul-oriented direction, and in many ways it was his most creative period. He never strayed too far from the blues, particularly as a guitarist, but his Stax sides increasingly showcased his amazingly expressive singing, ...
