| | Phil Alvin County Fair 2000 CD (1994)
Dirty Old Man: Greatest Hits CD music
$12.35 Brothers Phil and Dave Alvin were the heart of California roots-rockers the Blasters. After songwriter/guitarist Dave's departure for a solo career, Phil kept the group alive, but mostly on a local performance level, not as a recording unit. He released his first solo album in 1986, but it took him eight years to make another.
Like its predecessor, COUNTY FAIR finds Phil Alvin backed by a shifting cast of characters, exploring an eclectic batch of American roots styles, from blues to country to R&B and rockabilly. On several songs, he's backed by the '90s version of the Blasters, but Alvin goes further afield in collaborations with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and singer Mary Franklin. The solo efforts of each brother underline what the other brought to the Blasters; Dave's singing has never been described as mellifluous and songwriting is not really Phil's forte. The strongest cuts on COUNTY FAIR are those where Phil draws on his encyclopedic knowledge of American musical history by covering obscure blues and R&B gems; the most effective moments are those where he accompanies himself on guitar and breathes new life into such Americana relics as "That Thing" ...

CMJ (12/02, p.58) - "...Cross swims upstream...to confront the emptiness and crass commercialism of flag waving....Pointed and side-splitting at the same time while never sounding like he's doing a 'bit'..."
This double CD is Sub Pop's first (intentional) comedy release, recorded during David's 2002 national tour. He and Bob Odenkirk were the men responsible for HBO's popular comedy series, ...
| | Jim O'Rourke Tamper CD (1993) (Import) Import; Japan
Dirty Old Man: Greatest Hits CD music
$19.69 Re-issued in 2008, Jim O'Rourke's early three-song album, TAMPER, has come to be regarded as one of his finest. It is certainly exemplary of his early work's balance of electro-acoustic explorations with more traditional indie-rock structures, as well as of an oeuvre that helped define the dubious moniker "post-rock." TAMPER (1991) finds O'Rourke processing ...

| | George Shearing Very Best CD (2005)
Dirty Old Man: Greatest Hits songs
$9.65 Known for a revolutionary approach to playing that emphasizes block chords, British- born George Shearing remains one of the most important jazz pianists in history. Shearing is captured here during his heyday performing in three settings: with his quintet, with a big band, and with a rhythm section and string orchestra.
Shearing's most famous composition "Lullaby of Birdland" is included on this compilation. Performed as a dainty mid-tempo swing, this track best reveals the pianist's now famous "locked hands" approach to playing chords and melodies. Other high points include the Brazilian classic "One Note Samba" and the salsa-inflected "Cuban Love Song" (the latter features some virtuoso conga playing by Armando Peraza). "Cheek to Cheek" is performed here with a big band. On this selection, we hear a playful brass soli; exciting swoops, blats, and punchy syncopations make this tune one of the highlights of this collection. "Laura" is another impressive track ...
