Breaking with '70s heavy metal tradition by releasing a live album after only two studio efforts (you're supposed to have three before the live one), Rainbow served up this double platter in 1977. On Stage is full of great songs and playing, but somehow it lacks some of the excitement that existed at those early Ritchie Blackmore concerts. The production is just kind of flat. That doesn't change the fact that there is some great stuff to be found here and nowhere else, such as the side-long version of "Mistreated," from Deep Purple's Burn. The also epic version of "Catch the Rainbow" contains some awesome guitar work but is too long for its own good. In another break with metal tradition, the album kicks off with "Kill the King," a blazing rocker from their next platter, Long Live Rock 'n' Roll. The idea of opening your show with a song no one knows is very foreign to both heavy metal and double live albums. On the band's classic song, "Man on the Silver Mountain," Ronnie Dio cries out in his over-the-top vocal finale, "I'm the man, I'm the man, I'm the man....we're all the maaaaaaaaaannnn." That is unconsciously funny enough to make the disc worthwhile all by itself. ~ Geoff Ginsberg

5 stars Without a doubt the best live Rainbow
I`ve heard all the live albums that Rainbow has to offer and this is the Best one. Ronnies` vocals are crisp and he doesn`t sound exhausted like in the later performances. Cozy is electric and Jimmy Bain is awesome...and what can I say about the Man(Ritchie)...AWESOME!! I recommend this album to anyone who loves rock and roll!!!

1 star Still My Favorite Rainbow Album
Despite what the guy who wrote the review for this album for cd universe says.... this is the best Rainbow live recording Ive ever heard and Ive seen them 3 times myself with all different singers and lineups. I love Ritchie Blackmore and think he is the best at playing a smashed guitar...lol and the late Ronnie James Dio was definetely my parents worst nightmare when he sang... lift my spirits HIGHER and Higher ! ! . ( they thought it was about smoking pot ) Cozy Powells explosive drums were the loudest and Jimmy Bain sure knew how to play a base guitar. I still listen to this cd at least once a week. I miss this kind of music compared to todays so called rock n roll. this is stll MY Favorite Rainbow Album

this is a mint album.it,s up there with the best of all time.iv,e been playing it scince 1977,and it still sounds fantastic.,catch the rainbow particualy stands out and is in my top 3 tracks of all time.(freebird,and stairway in the mix)if you havent heard it yet,do so soon.(it sounds better in the dark. enough said. j d bridgewood
