Once upon a time in New York, with nothing more than wild fantasies spun off from the legend of B-movie actress Maria Montez for inspiration, the late underground film-maker Jack Smith and his friends started an aesthetic revolution. Luckily, the electric violinist/early minimalist Tony Conrad was there at the apartment on Ludlow Street to capture it all on tape.
A screaming excerpt from Conrad's innovative soundtrack to Smith's notorious 1963 film FLAMING CREATURES--the infamous "earthquake orgy" scene--sets the mood. In his unique piping drawl, Smith reads, improvises and giddily free-associates routines involving him and/or his "best friend" Frances Francine, a middle-aged drag queen whose last chance to wear an expensive evening gown inspires the long, poignant narrative that closes the disc. Throughout, Conrad, John Cale and original Velvet Underground drummer Angus Maclise provide suitably exotic musical accompaniment.
Recorded at 56 Ludlow St., New York, New York between 1962 and 1964.

The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants off of everything the producers give her. The album sometimes strays away from choral arrangements and focuses on individual actors, but it's hard not to sing along with a song like "Jump," where the cast replaces Eddie Van Halen's keyboard riff with bright choral harmonies. ~ Andrew Leahey

Múm's first album for Fat Cat -- by no coincidence, the label that also broke fellow Icelanders Sigur Rós -- has all the majestic synths, crackly drum machine percussion, sampled silence, and crystalline vocals you'd expect from the country that produced Björk and Sigur Rós, though with less focus on digital sound than the former and less reliance on drama than the latter. Múm is very interested in the music of sound, but Finally We Are No One never sounds like a difficult record; if it's not the instruments sounding naïve or folksy (in good ways), the lisping, childlike vocals are bound to prompt adjectives like adorable and precious.
