This recording was actually released once before, with the tracks in a different order, by Piranha Records in 1994. The bands on the album are all musicians from the town of Pinar del Rio, a town known well for its tobacco product used in the famous Cuban cigars. The main form of music on the album is salsa, though the styles vary from son to guaracha to danzon to bolero to punto to controversio. The music is all of an exceptionally high quality, and the slightly mixed order works well to showcase all of the styles. There are no singular highlights on the album, due to the quality of the songs on every track; whether they are vocal solos or instrumentals, it's all amazing. If you're a fan of salsa, this more traditional (than Miami-based salsa) recording will give you roots to work from. If you're not particularly a fan of the Miami salsa, the styles shown on this album will almost surely convert you (at least to the Cuban end). ~ Adam Greenberg
