Conductor Daniel Barenboim is one of the foremost Wagnerians of our time. He made his debut at Bayreuth in 1973 and has led many noteworthy performances at that important festival. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra has always had a knack for Wagner's music, so this recording is a particularly welcome event.
Barenboim and the orchestra thrill in the rambunctious romanticism of the overture to Wagner's early opera, 'Rienzi.' Equally impressive are their performances of more sober music, including preludes to the third acts of 'Tannhäuser' and 'Die Meistersinger.' The orchestra's first chair horn player, Dale Clevenger, offers a stirring version of the "Preislied" from 'Meistersinger,' while the rest of the brass section acquit themselves nicely with some breathtaking playing in the "Good Friday Spell" from 'Parsifal' and full bodied sound in the 'Tannhäuser' prelude. An added bonus is a delicately wrought performance of the tender 'Siegfried Idyll.'
This recording is beautifully engineered and features warm, vivid sound that is ideal for this music.

If composer Leo Delibes were alive today, he would be a very wealthy man.
