Louis Hayes/Woody Shaw Quintet: Louis Hayes (drums); Woody Shaw (trumpet, flugelhorn); Rene McLean (soprano & tenor saxophones, flute); Ronnie Mathews (piano); Stafford James (bass).
Recorded live at Salle d'Epallinges, Lausanne, Switzerland on February 4, 1977. Includes liner notes by Jimmy Woode.
Although drummer Louis Hayes receives top billing on this 1996 CD, it is for the heated and creative playing of his co-leader, trumpeter Woody Shaw, that the concert recording is primarily recommended. Joined by Rene McLean (who here often sounds like his father Jackie McLean) on tenor, soprano and flute, pianist Ronnie Mathews (a bit influenced by McCoy Tyner) and bassist Stafford James, Shaw is in top form. The repertoire consists of two of the trumpeter's best songs ("In Case You Haven't Heard" and "Moontrane"), an original apiece by Mathews and McLean, and Wayne Shorter's "Contemplation." The strong solos and advanced compositions fall between hard bop and post-bop. Woody Shaw was one of the most creative jazz trumpeters of all time, in some ways the final major follower of the Clifford Brown tradition, and this is one of his best live sets. ~ Scott Yanow

Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series, Vol. 5 album
$8.09 Forget the stylized in-session cover art closeup of the "jazz man at work:" eyes clenched shut, lips pursed around a mouthpiece, dim lighting. On the cover of his Blue Note debut Gordon appears perched in a Central Park carriage in a sharp-looking trench coat, one hand on his horn case, the other waving a cigarette, a big grin on his face. Doin' allright, indeed. And compared to some of his labelmates, Gordon was perhaps something of an already-arrived success, having been on the scene for over twenty years by the time of this 1961 recording.
The confidence one would expect therefore, and the sunny disposition implied by the cover, are equally borne out by the music within. Gordon ...

Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series, Vol. 5 songs
$16.49 Composed by pianist/leader Vyacheslav Ganelin, Ancora Da Capo is an inspired major work consisting of two parts, recorded live on two separate occasions in 1980 and each nearly 40 minutes long. The Ganelin Trio's brand of loosely structured free jazz was something really distinctive, though unfamiliar listeners might use the Art Ensemble of Chicago as a loose comparison since the two groups share several common elements: ...

Swiss Radio Days Jazz Series, Vol. 5 album
$22.75 This is the heart and soul of labour music, from Joe Hill, to Woody Guthrie to Billy Bragg. These are all-new recordings. They are exciting and fresh, and feature great vocal performances and wonderful musicianship by a range of Toronto-area artists. When union members get together at a party, bar or union school they can use this CD to learn and sing the songs that helped build the union movement we are part of today. The styles range from Jackie Richardson's amazingly powerful, moving jazz interpretation of Strange Fruit to Marnie Niemi and a swinging bluegrass combo on Which Side Are You On? Kathryn Rose's voice on Bread and Roses is soaring and beautiful. Robert Priest's Put It on the Ground will have you laughing, Coco 'Cognac' Brown nails Joe Hill, and The Ballad of Springhill by Mike Danckert is haunting. Unionists involved ...
