For this well-rounded set, pianist Kenny Drew, Jr. is heard unaccompanied, in a trio, and in groups as large as a sextet. He performs five of his originals, two by his father (the major bop pianist Kenny Drew), the obscure "The First Love Letter," and a reharmonized "Sweet and Lovely." Drew Jr. is the main solo star, but also gives plenty of space for trumpeter Michael Mossman, Ravi Coltrane on tenor and soprano, and vibraphonist Steve Nelson, with bassist Lynn Seaton and drummer Tony Reedus offering stimulating support. Some of the music is quite complex, but it always swings while keeping one guessing. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Stan Getz Bossas & Ballads: The Lost Sessions CD (2003)
Crystal River CD music
$15.39 First off, these "Lost Sessions" were never actually lost. The music here was supposed to be released as the Stan Getz Quartet's first issue on A&M, and for the usual record company reasons, it was shelved instead. The tapes were in the vault and catalogs, so it's not like they were found in someone's closet. The bottom line is that Getz, already ill at this point, still had the goods. Produced by Herb Alpert (a genius in his own right even if his records don't always hold up), the bossas ...

Crystal River CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, ...
| | Dave Pell Love Story/Piano & Pen CDs (2000)
Crystal River music CDs
$12.29 Originally released as two separate LPs: Dave Pell Octet: LOVE STORY (1956)/Dick Katz: PIANO & PEN (1959).
On this double CD, Love Story by the Dave Pell Octet is the dull next-door neighbor to pianist Dick Katz's swinging quartet on Piano & Pen. The Pell Octet, essentially a unit from within Les Brown's band, is the purveyor of pleasant, skillfully arranged and executed music. Its predecessors, like those of Brown's band, are the sweet bands of the swing era and the society bands from before that. Although reed player Pell and his bandmembers, including pianists André Previn and Claude Williamson, were mainstays of the West Coast jazz scene of the 1950s, jazz takes a back seat to the arrangements on this session from 1956. Solo space is brief, with the players hewing so closely to the melodies that solos sound written out. While the musicianship and arrangements (including four from Marty Paich) are very good, the general lack of substantive improvisation makes this set of limited interest to jazz fans. Redeeming things considerably, Piano & Pen is a cool, swinging set from 1959 that updates the sound of the Nat Cole Trio's instrumental ...

| | Ying Yang Twins Me & My Brother CD (2004)
Crystal River songs
$14.49 ME & MY BROTHER, the third album by Atlanta's Ying Yang Twins, follows the duo's prominently featured role on the Lil Jon & the Eastside Boys top 5 crossover hit "Get Low." In fact, the album capitalizes on that success immediately with "Georgia Dome," a sound-a-like sequel to that inescapable, infectious single. Crown Princes of Crunk, the Ying Yang Twins, Kaine and D-Roc, are all about following their ids, creating pared-down songs about sex, alcohol, blunts, and more sex--a formula the Twins use well. Kaine and D-Roc understand that there are values in simplicity and, indeed, the most memorable song is the catchphrase-worthy anthem "Hanh!"
Making the most of their guest appearance on ME & MY BROTHER, Lil Jon & the Eastside Boyz return a favor to the Twins, while adding one more song to the booty canon as they implore the ladies to shake it like a "Salt Shaker." And, in an inspired collaboration, two of the strongest, brashest voices to break out of the South--Killer Mike & Bone Crusher--trade rhymes on the predictably unchallengable "What The F***!" ME & MY BROTHER rolls on like that--a straightforward, raw, danceable record.
With their unabashedly hedonistic raps and signature chanting style, the Ying Yang Twins rose to the upper levels of the ...
