Though Throbbing Gristle's label, Industrial Records, inadvertently gave the music world a new genre heading, there's not much in the way of clanging pipes or steam-vent hiss on 20 JAZZ FUNK GREATS. Then again, you'll find no jazz (title track excepted), precious little funk, and only 13 songs here. "Maturing" beyond the performance-art outrages of COUM Transmissions, TG's Genesis P-Orridge, Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, and Peter Christopherson take to cutting slabs of murky, artless, malevolent noise with such titles as "Zyklon-B Zombie" and "Maggot Death."
GREATS slaps a sarcastic happy-face on the band's antisocial aesthetic. This is TG's "pop" album. The cover even shows them standing in a meadow, grinning ear-to-ear (or trying to). The cause of their amusement, however, is a nude female corpse splayed among the tall poppies. The creepy calm of "Tanith," the tortured synth-pop of "Still Walking," and "Hot On The Heels Of Love" capture the mood. Terminally sour P-Orridge's chanted litany of complaints ("What A Day") is pretty funny, and "Walkabout" is a lovely synth-strumental. But the voyeuristic aplomb with which he tears into "Persuasion," a grainy S&M script set to Gristle-y sound effects, is thoroughly unnerving.
Throbbing Gristle: Cosey Fanni Tutti (vocals, guitar, synthesizer, cornet); Peter Christopherson (vocals, cornet, vibraphone); Chris Carter (vocals, synthesizer); Genesis P-Orridge (violin, synthesizer, vibraphone, bass).

| | Suicide First Album CDs (1977)
20 Jazz Funk Greats album
$12.59 Seven years after the duo's inception, Suicide's debut album finally sneaked out in 1977 on the coat tails of the nascent New York punk scene. If its aim had been to confuse, startle, or repulse, SUICIDE succeeded in spades. By the same token, if a part-time sculptor and avant-garde jazz musician form a two-chord synthesizer duo and call it Suicide, commercial considerations are presumably low on their list of priorities. SUICIDE was a record destined to have future journalists reaching for words like "seminal". Synth duos start here.
SUICIDE's bleak, one-act plays of violence and sexual deviance, and that lo-fi monotone punctuated by sleazy groans ...

| | Sound Of Young Sacramento CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
20 Jazz Funk Greats music CDs
$16.95 "The Sound of Young Sacramento" doesn't have quite the same ring as the "The Sound of Young America" slogan at use in Motown during the 1960s. And the Bill Rase Recording Studio and Talent Center is not even a millionth as well known as Motown's studios. But like Motown, it recorded a good deal of music in the mid-1960s. Much of this was of local Sacramento rock bands, done with (even by standards of the time) primitive equipment, for singles that were intended as vanity pressings to sell at live shows or give to friends and family. This CD is a compilation of 30 such tracks from 1965-1967, all symptomatic of various facets of the American teen garage sound of the era. Now, this could not be said to be an authoritative overview of the mid-1960s Sacramento scene. There is nothing by the most well-known groups from the area (the New Breed, Kak, the Oxford Circle), "well-known" being a relative term as even those groups are all but unknown except to waist-deep-in-the-big-muddy '60s collectors. Even so, it can be said that if these sounds are an indicator, Sacramento was not an especially notable exponent of the garage sound, and indeed was a quite generic (if prolific) one. The main culprit, as also occurs on numerous other compilations of this sort? A paucity of quality original songwriting, combined with derivative arrangements and underdeveloped musical and instrumental skills. It's so-so garage music without a distinctive regional brand, although it does traverse the range of '60s teen rock, from elementary fuzzy bluesy rants to Zombies-ish beat ballads. The few cuts that stand out from the crowd a little are the Walking Flour's "I Want to Be Your Driver," ...

| | Golden State Funk - Impossibly Rare Funk From The Bay CD (2007)
20 Jazz Funk Greats songs
$14.79 Is this truly impossibly rare Bay Area funk? Sure -- half of these 20 cuts hadn't even been released, a few others hadn't been issued until they surfaced on some other early-21st century CD compilations, and the others appeared on very rare, very obscure releases in the late '60s and early '70s. As with any compilation that goes deep into rarities of a certain genre, this isn't stuff you could seriously put on the same level as the best funk from the era, and it's often derivative of major artists in the style. In this case, you'll hear serious props given to Sly & the Family Stone, the psychedelic funk-era Temptations, and James Brown, among others. That doesn't mean, however, that there aren't a lot of good, fun cuts here -- more so, in fact, than there usually are on such specialized rarity anthologies. While "Poor Sad Child Pts. 1-2" by the Windjammers, for instance, is a total rip of the Norman Whitfield-produced Temptations, it's a really good rip -- something that really ...
