| Miles Davis Kind Of Blue CDs (1958) 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition
Acid Brass music CDs
$89.55 The most well known, beloved, and bestselling jazz album of all time celebrates its 50th anniversary with a lavishly packaged collector's edition. It's widely agreed that Miles Davis reached a paragon of expression with KIND OF BLUE, and that the recording, which includes historic performances by Bill Evans, John Coltrane, and Cannonball Adderley, captures the essence of modern jazz. The 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR'S EDITION comes in a gatefold folder that holds an LP pressed on blue vinyl, a CD of the album that includes previously unreleased tracks, a bonus DVD, a hardback book, a memorabilia envelope, and a fold-out poster. The package is a must for Miles fanatics and marks the historical and musical importance of KIND OF BLUE in the manner it deserves.
With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its ...
| | Al Jarreau Christmas CD (2008)
Acid Brass songs
$15.19 For the past few decades, Al Jarreau has established himself as a truly modern jazz singer, one for the post-fusion generation--those who grew up with the sounds of the cordial contemporary jazz of George Benson, Spyro Gyra, and Herbie Hancock. CHRISTMAS is Jarreau's first-ever collection of holiday songs on which he wraps his supple, honeyed vocal chords around some traditional Christmas classics. Jazz vocal combo Take 6 lend their voices for "I'll Be Home For Christmas" and the considered, varied arrangements of Jay Graydon and Jarreau himself keep the proceedings interesting.
Arrangers: Chris Walker; Clare Fischer; Brent Fisher; Joe Turano; David Witham; Jay Graydon; Jorge Calandrelli; Al Jarreau; Larry Williams.
Personnel: Al Jarreau (vocals, background vocals); Chris Walker (vocals, bass instrument, bass guitar, background vocals); Take 6 (vocals); Ross Bolton (guitar); Michael O'Neill (guitars, electric guitar, nylon-string guitar); Michael Thompson (acoustic guitar, ...
| | Essential Tony Bennett CDs (2002) Limited Edition; Remastered
Acid Brass album
$16.09 It's almost shocking to realize that before this collection's release, the career of musical legend Tony Bennett had been extensively anthologized only in box-set format and never by a career-spanning two-disc compilation. Upon inspection, it seems like the ultimate no-brainer--pick some of the mainly highlights from this vocal sensation's 50-year career, put them in chronological order, and let the magic happen.
Happen it does, as we're treated to gems from every phase of Bennett's oeuvre. Casual listeners may be surprised to learn that the '50s found Tony successfully reinventing Hank Williams's "Cold Cold Heart" alongside more customary fare such as signature song "Rags to Riches." No one will be shocked at the very necessary inclusion of the '60s comeback smash "I Left My Heart in San Francisco," but those who think of Bennett as an artifact belonging only to Sinatra's time will be educated by the subsequent material included here. From the sinuously jazzy "Steppin' Out with My Baby" to a moving take on the Elllington evergreen "Mood Indigo" and an album-closing duet with K.D. Lang, the more contemporary material here makes just as convincing a case as the earlier work for Bennett as THE living master of the Great American Songbook.
Recorded between 1951 & 2001.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Compilation producers: Steve Berkowitz, Didier C. Deutsch.

| | Sun Ra Secrets Of The Sun CD (1965)
Acid Brass CD music
$13.89 An essential and, until its long overdue reissue in 2008, frustratingly elusive slice of seminal early Arkestra material, SECRETS OF THE SUN was recorded shortly after Sun Ra relocated from Chicago to New York in the early sixties and features a set of spare, brooding compositions performed by one of Ra's most powerful early ensembles. Clarinetist John Gilmore, guitarist Calvin Newborn and trumpeter Eddie Gale all make meaningful contributions to this dark, sometimes inscrutable outing, which bears traces of Ra's lingering obsession with doo-wop and his perennial fascination with themes of interstellar ...
