THE IDEAL COPY has 7 extra tracks, 4 songs from the "Snakedrill" EP and 3 live songs.
Following its 1979 record 154, Wire, hitherto one of punk rock's brightest lights, disappeared. Despite a live album in 1981 and a seven-inch single, it wasn't until 1986's SNAKEDRILL EP that any new studio tracks by the band surfaced. The EP signaled a new direction, as the band largely abandoned its punk pedigree and focused more on the artier side of its music, complete with all-but-impenetrable lyrics. THE IDEAL COPY was originally released in 1987, and most of its subsequent CD editions contain all of SNAKEDRILL.
Among the highlights are both versions of "Ahead," the first built on a furious bass line and brittle percussion (with a lot of cymbals), the second replacing the track's original density with trilling keyboards and a slowed-down pace, while retaining the bass line and cymbal work. The disturbing "Feed Me" comes complete with unnaturally slow tempo, amped industrial clanging courtesy Bruce Gilbert and Colin Newman's guitars, and Graham Lewis' strange, affected vocals; while "Ambitious," is a herky-jerky, jangling pop song. Also of note are the SNAKEDRILL tracks, especially "Drill"'s pulverizing beat and the a cappella harmonizing of "Up on the Sun," which also appears in a live version called "Vivid Riot of Red."
Recorded at Hansa Tonstudio, Berlin, Germany; Strongroom, London, England; The Metropol, Berlin, Germany.
Wire: Colin Newman (vocals, guitar); Graham Lewis (vocals, bass); Bruce Gilbert (guitar); Robert Gotobed (drums).

Q (6/95, p.147) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...Reacquainted with faders and flangers, [Wire] were less inclined toward pop scrapes and experimental edginess, preferring a plush elegantly accessible Britpop blend, their stoic new waviness softened by the electronic gadgetry of the age..." | | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Ideal Copy
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper ...

$11.99 On his first record since his Oscar nomination courtesy director Gus Van Zandt's use of his music in the film "Good Will Hunting," Elliott Smith returns with another album's worth of gorgeous misery. Like Nick Drake before him, Smith has the ability to conjure beautifully poignant pathos, wrapping it in an elaborately arranged package worthy of a George Martin or Brian Wilson. Working with Beck/Foo Fighters producer Rob Schnapf, Smith uses Abbey Road Studios for some of these sessions, dressing up his tortured lyrics with orchestral arrangements that avoid any hint of mawkishness.

| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Ideal Copy
$11.89 Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs ...

Four self-produced, self-released albums along with extensive U.S. and European tours have earned JABE a reputation as one of Boston's best and hardest working live acts.
