Attention Deficit is another progressive supergroup that records for the Magna Carta label (i.e., Liquid Tension Experiment, Explorers Club, etc.). Comprised of new age bassist Michael Manring, ex-Primus drummer Tim Alexander, and ex-Testament guitarist (and one-time student of Joe Satriani) Alex Skolnick, Attention Deficit is more about atmospheric songwriting than technical shredding. For those who have lost track of Skolnick since his days with thrash metallists Testament, his playing with Attention Deficit is more akin to King Crimson's Fripp and Belew than Metallica's Hetfield and Hammett. He is also quite an accomplished acoustic guitar player -- most of the rhythm guitar tracks on Attention Deficit are acoustic-based. Highlights include the bouncy "Scapula," the vast sound of album opener "ATM," and the hard rocker "Febrile." Although the combination of these three instrumentalists may sound peculiar on paper, they somehow make it all work extremely well. ~ Greg Prato

Purchase Attention Deficit CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Terry Bozzio Black Light Syndrome CD (1997)
Attention Deficit album
$13.49 This power trio has famous roots, and they've brought it all together masterfully. First cut "The Sun Road" starts off like a tune off of David Gilmour's first solo album and then vanishes into a driving, power-chorded surge of soulful rock. Next, "Dark Corners" is a massive rocker that pulls you under its powerful whirlpool of guitar/bass/drum frenzy. Stevens tortures the guitar into absolute submission without any predictable riffs. Levin looms everywhere, and Bozzio flows in a polyrhythmic jungle. Fine interactive tension and execution everywhere. This goes way beyond King Crimson's Red days.
"Duende" opens with flamenco guitar firebursts, and slowly builds into a decent Spanish-flavored piece. Not my favorite, but well done. The title cut, "Black Light Syndrome," is obviously a play on "Bozzio Levin Stevens." It is a slower-paced dirge and filled to the brim with ...
| | Explorers Club Age Of Impact CD (1998)
Attention Deficit CD music
$13.85 This is another of the supergroup combinations from the Magna Carta label and is the brainchild of Trent Gardner of Magellan. It features Terry Bozzio (Frank Zappa) on drums, Billy Sheehan (Talas) on bass, and the soloing of John Petrucci (Dream Theater). There are also several other guest musicians, such as Steve Howe (Yes) and James LaBrie (Dream Theater). It is one of the more intelligent and diverse progressive albums to emerge during the '90s. Unlike its predecessors, Black Light Syndrome and Liquid Tension Experiment, this is more of a progressive rock (as opposed to metal) recording in the tradition of Jethro Tull and Genesis. Bozzio's drumming adds a unique quality to the band, as do the diverse vocal stylings of each singer. It isn't often that you get to hear a single body of work that features consistent music with different vocalists and musicians changing throughout. There is the obvious risk that the music would sound too pieced together; however, this is a homogenous ...

| | Grand Funk Railroad Survival CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Attention Deficit album
$8.85 By the time Grand Funk Railroad came to make Survival in January 1971, Cleveland Recording had moved to new quarters, and the group had become a national phenomenon, its last two albums Top Ten million-sellers. They spent a relatively luxurious six weeks or so on the record, and the results showed; Survival was the best-sounding and the best-played album they had yet made. Such assessments are, of course, relative, however. The group's playing remained rudimentary, especially in the rhythm section, and its sense of song construction was simple and repetitious. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Mark Farner sang in a strained, limited tenor lyrics that yearned for basic satisfactions ("Comfort Me," "I Want Freedom"), then led the lengthy instrumental passages with either simple guitar patterns or simple organ patterns. The band's choice of covers, Traffic's "Feelin' Alright" and ...
| | An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess CD (2000)
Attention Deficit CD music
$10.59 Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates his well-rounded skills, proving why he is an in-demand session player for the likes of David Bowie and Paul Winter. Petrucci too is a fine musician, but lacks the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication ...
| | Wilson Pickett Take Your Pleasure Whre You Find It CD (2003) (Import) Australia
Attention Deficit music CDs
$11.65 Wilson Pickett will always be remembered for his 1960s stay at Atlantic Records, where, working with the Stax producers and musicians, he issued such deep soul classics as "In the Midnight Hour," "Mustang Sally," "Funky Broadway," and "Land of 1000 Dances." With his amazingly rough, raw, and primal vocals, Pickett was every bit as explosive a performer as Sam & Dave, and if he lacked the smoother, more refined side of an Otis Redding, well, Pickett wasn't about refining things, he was about breaking through the wall to the other side. Pickett left Atlantic for RCA in 1972, eventually releasing four albums for them through the mid-'70s, and the best tracks on those albums are ...
| | Rick Derringer Take Two CD (2002)
Attention Deficit songs
$5.69 The Edgar Winter Group/Rick Derringer is a split CD featuring five songs each by the Edgar Winter Group and Rick Derringer. Often on a disc like this the two bands are thrown together with no real link between the two. In this case, however, Derringer played in Edgar Winter's band and produced his best records, so it makes perfect sense that the two are together. The five Winter songs include his two big hits, the number one smash "Frankenstein" and the AOR staple "Free Ride," and three other tunes that show off his easygoing vocals and rollicking piano. The Derringer cuts are all first-rate rockers. Of course, "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" is the best, but of the remaining four, "Teenage Love Affair" and "Let Me In" are highlights. The faux-reggae version of "Hang On Sloopy" may rub a few purists the wrong way, but it is fun. Taken together, the ten tracks here are a good, low-cost way to get the best of two rock veterans who are too often overlooked. [The Edgar Winter Group/Rick Derringer was first issued as Take Two by Sony Special Products in 2002. The Collectables version features the same track listing but a different cover.] ~ Tim Sendra

| | Funeral Pyre Nature Of Betrayal CD (2007)
Attention Deficit songs
$11.39 Picked up for reissue by Prosthetic Records one year after its original release in 2006, The Nature of Betrayal is the sophomore album by So Cal extreme metal band, the Funeral Pyre, and, boy oh boy, these kids are about as frightening as one of those wildfires that regularly torment the region. That's because their sound converges almost exactly betwixt the dark realms of black and death metal, fusing raspy vocal screeches, and ample blastbeats from the former, with insidious melodies and Cookie Monster growls from the latter -- all the while draping most everything with atmospheric synthesizers for good ...
