This is the second of Magna Carta's one-time-only groupings and the second to feature bassist Tony Levin. Fortunately for all concerned, it's light years beyond Black Light Syndrome, which paired Levin with guitarist Steve Stevens and drummer Terry Bozzio in an ill-conceived and poorly executed set of improvisations. There is one such impromptu excursion here, the concluding 28-minute "Three Minute Warning," but even it holds up favorably by comparison. But it's the rest of the tunes here that showcase the versatility of Dream Theater members John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy and Dregs keyboardist Jordan Rudess. They fit the fusion/prog rock tag, with plenty of chopsmanship on display, but also with some allegiance to melody and restraint. Not likely to get any radio play, but then that wasn't the point of the session. ~ Ross Boissoneau

| | An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess CD (2000)
Liquid Tension Experiment CD music
$10.29 Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates his well-rounded skills, proving why he is an in-demand session player for the likes of David Bowie and Paul Winter. Petrucci too is a fine musician, but lacks the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication to serve as a strong accompanist. This limitation does not prevent the session from being enjoyable, in fact, it is Petrucci's energetic soloing that provides the most excitement. It was obvious that both players had several ideas and styles they wanted to explore, which are done so with restraint and sensitivity. The opening "Furia Taurina" finds Petrucci displaying his DiMeola-like ...

| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Liquid Tension Experiment songs
$10.59 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful ...

Liquid Tension Experiment music CDs
$13.99 Except for Quicksand's masterpiece Slip, there might not be a finer example of progressive hardcore than Stillsuit's At the Speed of Light. After achieving underground success with their debut EP Green Spock Ears, the New York quartet signed with fledgling TVT imprint Building Records -- run by famed hardcore producer Don Fury (Helmet, Orange 9mm) -- and released this awesome 14-track collection. Stillsuit make their avant-hardcore claim via complex musical figures that create an ...
| | Earth Crisis Slither CD (2000) Enhanced CD
Liquid Tension Experiment songs
$13.05 The problem with Slither is that it is not challenging. The music is heavy and well played, a synthesis between the band's early-'90s hardcore roots and the "new metal" of Korn and the Deftones. However, nothing particularly stands out about it. Devices such as melodic choruses and breaks stand out at first but fall into over-use as the disc plays onward. The group's conviction is admirable as always, though, ...
| | Sister Rosetta Tharpe Complete Recorded Works, Vol. 2 (1942-1944) CD (1996)
Liquid Tension Experiment album
$13.15 Recorded between 1942 and 1944. Includes liner notes by Ken Romanowski.
Although barely remembered today, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was, at the height of her fame, every bit as well-known as contemporary gospel giant Mahalia Jackson. Tharpe may not have been Jackson's equal as a singer--few if any gospel singers have been--but she was a tremendously gifted and exuberant vocalist. She was further blessed with a genius for the guitar, picking it rapid-fire in a blues-inflected staccato style. If there's any justice in the world, Document Records' three-volume release of Tharpe's work will rekindle interest in this gospel virtuoso.
VOLUME 2 of the Document set covers the years 1942 to 1944 and includes both austere recordings of Tharpe accompanied only by her own guitar and more lavish ensemble recordings. Particularly interesting is one of Tharpe's few extant blues recordings, "I Want a Tall Skinny Papa," cut with Lucky Millinder's orchestra. Also included is a live recording of Tharpe with Louis Jordan and his Timpani Five performing "Down By the Riverside." The best is saved for last, however, as the disc closes with Tharpe's first collaborations with the Sam Price Trio, a partnership that would soon yield the greatest work ...

| | House Of Love CD (1990)
Liquid Tension Experiment music CDs
$9.79 Following the combination of indie success and massive hype leading up to the band's first album proved to be too much for the original lineup, with Bickers leaving after a series of problems and pressures once the group signed to Fontana. Yet rarely has a fraught series of recording sessions resulted in something so flat-out stunning. The House of Love's second self-titled album in a row -- third counting the German singles comp -- remains something of a high-water mark in what can loosely be termed U.K. post-punk music, acting as an effective final statement before the onslaughts of Madchester, grunge, and Brit-pop. It's almost impossible to tell who is more responsible for what on the album, given its stitched-together nature, but whatever Bickers contributes matches Chadwick's cool but never cold performances note for note, and the result is deep blue rapture. Starting with the snaky crawl of "Hannah," sidling in over a series of echoed guitar notes, the 12-song collection does everything from revisiting past heights to scaling new ones. "Shine On" gets re-recorded in an arguably much more powerful performance, Evans' drums and Bickers pounding away out in front, while one early ...
