| | Dream Theater Octavarium CD (2005)
Liquid Tension Experiment songs
$10.65 As the sole major-label progressive-metal act, Dream Theater invariably set the standard as the flagship band of the genre. With the numerically themed OCTAVARIUM (including eight tracks signifying the band's eighth release) the shred-rock quintet continues to challenge themselves creatively. Opening track "The Root Of All Evil" picks up the thread that began with "The Glass Prison" (SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE) and carried forward to "This Dying Soul" (TRAIN OF THOUGHT). Drummer Mike Portnoy's lyrics for these songs read like a set of deeply personal journal entries documenting his painful recovery experience, further disclosed by a footnote nod to Alcoholics Anonymous co-founder Bill Wilson. OCTAVARIUM chiefly finds Dream Theater stepping back from elaborate fretboard acrobatics, focusing on vocal-based, song-oriented material ("I Walk Beside You," "The Answer Lies Within"); much in the spirit of AWAKE and their breakthrough album IMAGES AND WORDS. "Sacrificed Sons" captures the heartbreak of the 9/11 tragedy, while the grandiose title track showcases a melodic, Styx-inspired keyboard solo by Jordan Rudess (better known for a blisteringly frenetic style). Twenty years since their inception, Dream ...

| | Sister Rosetta Tharpe Complete Recorded Works Vol. 2 (1942-1944) CD (1995)
Liquid Tension Experiment album
$13.39 Recorded between 1942 and 1944. Includes liner notes by Ken Romanowski.
Although barely remembered today, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was, at the height of her fame, every bit as well-known as contemporary gospel giant Mahalia Jackson. Tharpe may not have been Jackson's equal as a singer--few if any gospel singers have been--but she was a tremendously gifted and exuberant vocalist. She was further blessed with a genius for the guitar, picking it rapid-fire in a blues-inflected staccato style. If there's any justice in the world, Document Records' three-volume release of Tharpe's work will rekindle interest in this gospel virtuoso.
VOLUME 2 of the Document set covers the years 1942 to 1944 and includes both austere recordings of Tharpe accompanied only by her own guitar and more lavish ensemble recordings. Particularly interesting is one of Tharpe's few extant blues recordings, "I Want a Tall Skinny Papa," cut with Lucky Millinder's orchestra. Also included is a live recording of Tharpe with Louis Jordan and his Timpani Five performing "Down By the Riverside." The best is saved for last, however, ...

| | Bloodline Storm & Brilliance CD (2005)
Liquid Tension Experiment CD music
$16.29 "Storm & Brilliance" consist of six songs connected by interludes, all characterised by a transcendental concept. Bloodoline's idea of Black Metal is to keep the extremity without following the conventional cliches, which this genre has always expressed, using a very personal sound and original music. Their music, as well as their lyrical concept, expresses ...
| | Late Night Alumni Empty Streets CD (2005) (Import) Import
Liquid Tension Experiment music CDs
$15.75 Kaskade legends team up with sultry vocalist Becky Williams to create deep house and dreamy beat heaven with their Late Night Alumni project, which came about when Finn heard Becky sing on a local Salt Lake City Christmas compilation, and impressed by what he heard, tracked her down to provide some vocals on a song he had written. The first single from the album, also entitled Empty Streets, boasts a remix by Kaskade themselves among others. It's textured deep house and ...
