| | Santana (1st LP) CD (1969) 1st Album; Remastered
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$8.29 Also available in a 3-pack with ABRAXAS and SANTANA (3rd LP).
Before the arrival of Carlos Santana's eponymous band, the San Francisco rock scene drew the inspiration for its jam-oriented music mainly from blues, rock, and Eastern modalities. Santana added Latin music to the mix, forever changing the course of rock & roll history. On Santana's groundbreaking debut album, the group mixes Latin percussion with driving rock grooves. Santana's unique guitar style, alternately biting and liquid, vies with the multiple percussionists for the sonic focus.
Unlike later efforts, Santana's first album features an abundance of loose collective compositions based on a couple of simple riffs ("Jingo," "Soul Sacrifice"). This approach allows for Santana and his bandmates to flex their improvisational muscles to fine effect. The high energy level on SANTANA is infectious--the laid-back feel of other '60s S.F. groups was clearly not for Carlos and company.
Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres.
Recorded at Pacific Recording, San Mateo, California in May 1969 and live at The Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York on August 16, 1969.
Santana: Carlos Santana (vocals, guitar); Greg Rolie (vocals, piano, organ); Dave Brown (bass); Mike Shrieve (drums); Jose Chepito Areas (timbales, congas, percussion); Mike Carabello (congas, percussion).
Reissue producer: Bob Irwin.
| | Amf Bach: Keyboard Concertos No 1, 2 & 4 / Perahia, Et Al CD (2001)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$10.69 Murray Perahia continues his traversal of the keyboard works of J. S. Bach. On this outing he moves away from solo pieces such as the Goldberg Variations and English Suites, and concentrates his efforts on concertos, specifically Nos. 1, 2, and 4. Perahia does double duty on this recording, as soloist and conductor. Perahia is no newcomer to conducting from the keyboard, and his keen musicianship should never be underestimated.
As expected, he negotiates the solo part of these masterworks with his usual blend of elegance, musical acuity, and impeccable technique. He maneuvers through the fleet passages of the Allegro sections with a sure-fingered ease that projects lightness and clarity, and in slow movements, such as the Adagio from the First Concerto and the Larghetto from the Fourth, demonstrates his innate ability to fully express the lyricism of a melodic line. The qualities that distinguish his playing--musical finesse, scrupulous attention to detail, and clarification of textures, as well as a finely maintained balance and precise articulation--also inform his conducting, and, consequently, the performance of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields. This is a polished, intelligent endeavor that fosters anticipation of Perahia's continued exploration of the Baroque repertoire.

| | Amf Bach: Keyboard Concertos No 3, 5, 6 & 7 / Perahia, Asmf CD (2002)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$12.15 This album was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Soloist(s) Performance with Orchestra.
Murray Perahia continues his exploration of the keyboard works of J.S. Bach with another disc of Concertos, this one featuring Nos. 3, 5, 6, and 7. He picks up right where he left off on his previous album; offering brilliantly informed performances that once again demonstrate his blend of elegance, musical acuity, and impeccable technique. Perahia dispatches the solo sections of these masterworks with aplomb, and his scrupulous attention to detail, precise articulation, and interpretative insights makes for perfectly balanced accounts that are vibrant and refreshing.
Perahia once again leads the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields from the keyboard, and the ensemble responds with polished, intelligent playing. Tempos are lively but never rushed in the Allegros, with particular care given to clarity of textures, while the slower movements are appropriately warm and expressive. This is an outstanding follow-up disc and another example of music-making at its finest.

| | David Garrett CD (2009)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$9.75 Feisty re-imaginings of beloved songs from the pop, folk, and classical canon make violinist David Garrett's self-titled album an unpredictable and joyous listen. Garrett--a former student of Itzhak Perlman--has remarkable control over his tone, guiding his violin to sound tremblingly sweet ("Nothing Else Matters"), bluesy and soulful ("Ain't No Sunshine"), jaunty ("Zorba's Dance"), and even aggressive and artfully harsh ("Thunderstruck"), a versatility that allows him to cover Metallica and traditional Hungarian folk dances with equal aplomb.
