| | Johnny Winter Second Winter CD (1970)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$8.55 Also available in a 3-pack with JOHNNY WINTER and CAPTURED LIVE.
Johnny Winter's second album for Columbia--duh--1970's SECOND WINTER is also notorious for a gimmicky sales device. When the recording sessions were over, Winter had enough material for an album and a half; rather than add a side of filler, Columbia simply promoted the album as the world's first three-sided album. (In a snarky review, Rolling Stone sarcastically gave the blank fourth side an in-depth discussion.)
The last of Winter's albums to feature his original backing band--drummer Uncle John Turner, bassist Tommy Shannon, and brother Edgar on keyboards and saxes--SECOND WINTER is a refinement of the blues-rock aesthetic of 1969's JOHNNY WINTER. Louder, harder, faster, and more reckless, this is to JOHNNY WINTER as Elvis Costello's THIS YEAR'S MODEL is to MY AIM IS TRUE: an album so phenomenal that it makes the debut, excellent though it is, sound weak in comparison. Highlights include the punky "I Hate Everybody" and a brilliant Hendrix-style deconstruction of Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited."
Includes liner notes by Johnny Winter.
Personnel: Johnny Winter (vocals, guitar, mandolin); Edgar Winter (alto saxophone, piano, harpsichord, organ); Tommy Shannon, Dennis Collins (bass); John Turner (drums, percussion).
| | Santana (1st LP) CD (1969) 1st Album; Remastered
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$9.25 Also available in a 3-pack with ABRAXAS and SANTANA (3rd LP).
Before the arrival of Carlos Santana's eponymous band, the San Francisco rock scene drew the inspiration for its jam-oriented music mainly from blues, rock, and Eastern modalities. Santana added Latin music to the mix, forever changing the course of rock & roll history. On Santana's groundbreaking debut album, the group mixes Latin percussion with driving rock grooves. Santana's unique guitar style, alternately biting and liquid, vies with the multiple percussionists for the sonic focus.
Unlike later efforts, Santana's first album features an abundance of loose collective compositions based on a couple of simple riffs ("Jingo," "Soul Sacrifice"). This approach allows for Santana and his bandmates to flex their improvisational muscles to fine effect. The high energy level on SANTANA is infectious--the laid-back feel of other '60s S.F. groups was clearly not for Carlos and company.
Includes liner notes by Ben Fong-Torres.
Recorded at Pacific Recording, San Mateo, California in May 1969 and live at The Woodstock Festival, Bethel, New York on August 16, 1969.
Santana: Carlos Santana (vocals, guitar); Greg Rolie (vocals, piano, organ); Dave Brown (bass); Mike Shrieve (drums); Jose Chepito Areas (timbales, congas, percussion); Mike Carabello (congas, percussion).
Reissue producer: Bob Irwin.
| | Neil Young CD (1969)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$9.85 Neil Young's first solo record is quite a bit different from the sound he would later develop--not that anyone could ever know what to expect from this mercurial visionary. This album, though, is a bit artier and less spontaneous-sounding than most of Young's catalog. That's not to say that he hadn't already developed a gift for writing unique, captivating material. He'd already shown that ability with Buffalo Springfield, and NEIL YOUNG is full of great, idiosyncratic tunes.
The most well-known cut here is the most traditional rock-sounding tune, "The Loner," but even here Young sings of disaffection and isolation, over an arrangement that shifts between distorted guitar and elegant string section. "The Old Laughing Lady" is probably the most Springfieldish song here, and along with the country flavor of some of the other tunes, provides a link to Young's past. The piece de resistance is the closing acoustic epic, "The Last Trip To Tulsa," a surreal, Dylanesque number that showed Young already blazing his own trail in the world of rock poets.
Live Recording
Engineers include: Mark Richardson, Donn Landee, Dale Batchelor.
Personnel includes: Neil Young (vocals, guitar); Jim Messina (bass); George Grantham (drums); Merry Clayton, Brenda Holloway, Patrice Holloway, Gloria Richetta Jones, Sherlie Matthews, Gracia Nitzsche (background vocals).

| | Tom Jones 24 Hours CD (2008)
Leoncavallo: Pagliacci / Muti, Pavarotti, Dessi, Pons, Et Al
$15.18 Tom Jones's first release of all-new material since 1993's THE LEAD AND HOW TO SWING IT, 24 HOURS finds the ageless Welsh wonder working with contemporary songwriting and production team Future Cut, best known for their work on Lily Allen's ALRIGHT STILL. Rather than attempting to ape contemporary commercial trends, however, 24 HOURS adapts the sound of 2008 to Jones's own trademark R&B-influenced barrel-chested singing style, and it's an effective combination. Highlights include a cover of Bruce Springsteen's "The Hitter" and a collaboration with Bono and The Edge, "Sugar Daddy," as well as the dynamic, danceable first single, "If He Should Ever Leave You."
