This disc is a recital of traditional flute music of the British Isles, America, Quebec and Cape Breton. Norman's sweet-toned flute leads a rousing set of tunes from Britain, Ireland, the U.S. and Canada. ~ Steve Winick Early Music

Verdi: Il Trovatore

The track listing might give the impression that Morton Feldman specifically composed his 1980 "Trio" in five separate movements, but this is misleading. It is in fact a continuous span of music, but given the limitations of the compact disc, this 88-minute performance by violinist Kristina Radcke, cellist Adelheid Schloemann, and pianist Albert Breier has to spill over onto a second CD. The other available version, on hatART by members of the Ives Ensemble, clocks in at 76 minutes and fits on one. Comparing available versions of Feldman's late compositions can reveal huge discrepancies in terms of duration, most notably in the violin and piano work "For John Cage" (the Yashushi Toyoshima and Aki Takahashi recording of the piece is nearly 32 minutes longer than Christina Fong and Paul Hersey's reading!), but from the evidence of Feldman's own tempo indications it's safe to assume that the faster version is closer to what was specified by the score. "Trio," by dint of its duration, is usually considered as "late Feldman," but its odd, sudden shifts of texture and material mark it more as a transitional work from the thorny late-'70s pieces such as "Spring of Chosroes" and "Piano," and as such it's better served in the faster, less conspicuously emotive reading of the Ives Ensemble. Which is not to say that this sensitive, careful reading by Radcke, Schloemann, and Breier is without its qualities. It all depends on how you like your Feldman. ~ Dan Warburton 2 Cds

Kronos Quartet Winter Was Hard CD

Verdi: Il Trovatore

Winter Was Hard is a fairly typical early mélange type recording by Kronos, mixing in au courant contemporary fare with a downtown edge and 20th century classics. Of the former, John Zorn's "Forbidden Fruit" (originally available on his album Spillane) is the standout composition, one of the very best pieces he ever wrote in this idiom. Mixing the string quartet with turntablist Christian Marclay's wild thrashings and vocalist Ohta Hiromi's intensely erotic whisperings was an inspired move. John Lurie's "Bella by Barlight" is appropriately noirish, while Astor Piazzolla, who had just been introduced to the American public via American Clave records, is ably represented by one of his down-and-dirty tangos. Terry Riley and Arvo Part are less well-represented by works that wallow a bit much in tired minimalist and mystical areas respectively. Alfred Schnittke's "Quartet No. 3" is a robust and romantic work, played with bravura by Kronos, though for sheer gorgeous romanticism, it's tough to outdo Barber's "Adagio," here rearranged for string quartet but losing little of its passion and beauty. Winter Was Hard is worth hearing for its highlights, definitely so if the listener hasn't otherwise heard the Zorn piece. ~ Brian Olewnick

Ben Cosgrove Kaleidoscope CD  (2005)

Verdi: Il Trovatore
CD $16.45
Ben Cosgrove has been writing instrumental songs since before he started losing baby teeth, and it's generally agreed that the music develops further and further with the release of each new CD. His latest effort, Kaleidoscope offers proof of Ben's breakthrough into the realm of definitive musical maturity, offering 12 (actually, 13) brand-new tracks with influences varying from pop to new age to rock to jazz. Ben's music is also marked by the fact that he plays virtually every instrument on the album, an impressive feat considering the 20+ instruments that color songs like Treading Water or Undertow. In addition to serving as the album's sole architect and performer, Ben also helmed the record's production and art design. Kaleidoscope sold 300 copies in its first 3 weeks of availability, and is being hailed as Ben's best work yet. Fans of the traditional new age piano music will find what they're looking for in songs like Treeline or Refraction, while Ben simultaneously delves into uncharted musical waters with songs like Mirror and Treading Water. "The goal of the music," Ben says in an interview, "is to give you something to connect to. Instrumental music kinda has a leg up in that regard- it's designed for you to apply to your own life and your own experiences. If you can personally connect to my music, or anybody's art for that matter, it's definitely achieved the goal it was created for." Ben also is an Aquarius and enjoys long walks on the beach.
