Michael Feinstein has built a career out of interpreting standards and favorites from the American Songbook, so THE SINATRA PROJECT, an album of tunes made famous by Ol' Blue Eyes, comes as no surprise. Rather than trying to imitate Sinatra, Feinstein takes pains to arrange and deliver standbys like "Fools Rush In," "I've Got a Crush On You," and "You Go To My Head" in a style distinctive from the master. Fourplay has long been a supergroup of fusion and smooth jazz, consisting of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason, each a leader in his own right. For their debut on the Heads Up label, Fourplay works some world music influences into their mix. Also, emerging vocal star Esperanza Spalding makes an appearance. But fear not, Fourplay fans, there are still plenty of the hallmarks of their sound--colorful melodies, funky-easy grooves, and classy keyboard and guitar solos.

This session was valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer's first jazz date in 13 years after a period writing for the studios and then away from music altogether. Brookmeyer, who is featured in a quintet with cornetist Thad Jones, pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist George Mraz and drummer Mel Lewis, proves to still be in prime form playing in an unchanged style. Other than the leader's uptempo blues 'In a Rotten Mood' and a Latin piece ('Carib'), the quintet sticks to veteran standards. Highlights include 'Sweet and Lovely,' 'Caravan' and 'You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To.'

Pianist Aaron Parks made his Blue Note debut with 2008's INVISIBLE CINEMA, a 10-track set in an impressionistic post-bop vein. Flanked by drummer Eric Harland, guitarist Mike Moreno, and bassist Matt Penman, Parks employs the elegant, fluid, often progressive style that brought him notice as a member of Terence Blanchard's group, yet the sound here is all Parks's own. This is gorgeous, finely sculpted contemporary jazz that harnesses top-notch group interplay, offsetting the often intricate melodies with restraint and space for a thoroughly absorbing listening experience.

Funk masters Tower Of Power's tight, funky sound is in high gear on BUMP CITY, one of the group's strongest efforts.
