GIL & JORGE pairs two of the most prominent figures associated with Brazil's late-'60s Tropicalia movement. Though Rio-based Jorge Ben focused primarily on fusions of samba and African music and steered clear of the overt political statements ... Full Descriptionthat led to Gilberto Gil's tangles with the Brazilian regime of the time, his propulsive guitar and easy vocals blend perfectly with the Bahia native's folk-rock ethos.
Essentially, this is a jam session par excellence; Gil and Ben face off with their voices and guitars and set the tape rolling. Entirely acoustic instrumentation gives the session a spare, organic sound, and the singers really let it hang out here, with scatting, call-and-response, and melodic and harmonic free association. The parameters are loose and free-flowing, and most of the songs roll on for 10 minutes or more, with plenty of improvisation. Ben's groovy "Taj Mahal" (a close melodic forebear of Rod Stewart's "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy"), is one of the highlights, as are the exuberant "Morre O Burro, Fica O Homen," and the relentlessly chugging "Jurubeba." GIL & JORGE is a jewel in the significant discographies of both artists.

Musician (4/93, p.93) - "...as moving a realization of the resonant spaces and gaits of an all-acoustic groove album as you'll discover....the songs work themselves into frenzies or take their sweet time, always more concerned with feel than with accuracy..." | | Gilberto Gil Quanta CD (1997)
Gil & Jorge CD music
$9.25 Produced with great slickness by the ex-Mutante known as Liminha, QUANTA features Gil in top vocal form. As usual with a Gilberto Gil recording, a wide variety of musical styles is represented here. The English translations of the lyrics also point to a wide range of subjects, from the Internet to garlic pills to the nature of creativity.
Some of the songs such as "Pela Internet" and "Guerra Santa" are impressive juxtapositions that intertwine contemporary Brazilian pop with elements of blues, rap and just ...

Gil & Jorge music CDs
$15.89 Joao Gilberto is perhaps forever destined to be lesser known to casual jazz fans than his occasional collaborator Stan Getz (whose GETZ/GILBERTO albums introduced the United States to bossa nova) and his ex-wife Astrud Gilberto (whose shy, delicate voice made her one of the most distinctive and beloved jazz vocalists of the '60s). However, true fans of ...

| | Gilberto Gil O Sol De Oslo CD (1998)
Gil & Jorge album
$12.49 Principally recorded at Rainbow Studio, Oslo, Norway in November 1994. Includes liner notes by Hermano Vianna.
O SOL DE OSLO was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This 1998 Gilberto Gil recording is rather different from QUANTA and his other '90s releases. With SOL DE OSLO, Gil attempts to represent some of the culturally diverse variations of the music of Brazil's Northeast, known as the sertao (backlands.) He brings with him the lovely accordion playing of Toninho Ferragutti, as well as a tabla player and various other instruments representing a cross-cultural, trans-global sound.
As if this were not enough, Gil and his musicians also collect traditional songs from all over Brazil to be performed alongside originals written by Gil and the producer of SOL DE ...
| | Milton Nascimento Clube Da Esquina CD (1972)
Gil & Jorge CD music
$12.95 Digitally remastered by Milton Nascimento (May 1994, Abbey Road Studios, London, England).
The great Brazilian singer Elis Regina once said, "If God were to sing, it would be with the voice of Milton." She probably meant it as a compliment to God. Of all the amazing sounds to come out of Brazil, few are as distinctive or as moving as the voice of Milton Nascimento.
CLUBE DA ESQUINA ("Corner Club") is a 1972 collaboration with friend and fellow musician Lo Borges. Joined by a talented group of musicians whom the two had grown up with in the Minas Gerais district of Brazil, Nascimento and Borges cover a startlingly broad range of styles and moods, from folk-influenced tunes of love and lament to rock-tinged songs that veil ...

| | Paquito D'Rivera Reunion CD (1991)
Gil & Jorge album
$17.75 Two of Latin jazz's most brilliant leading lights are brought together on this 2004 recording. As alumni of the groundbreaking Orquestra Cubana de Musica Moderna, bandmates in the genre-splicing fusion group Irakere, defectors from their native Cuba, and international superstars, Paquito D'Rivera and Arturo Sandoval have a lot in common, not least their synthesis of complex Cuban styles within a range of jazz idioms. REUNION finds the two joining forces once again, with a remarkable young cadre of players lending support.
The smoky, gorgeous feel of Chucho Valdes's bolero "Claudia" allows ample space for D'Rivera's dead-eye melodic sense and pure, expressive tone on the sax. A treatment of "Body & Soul" (with fluid, dancing trumpet by Sandoval) offers the only other down-tempo breather in the set. Otherwise, an intricate web of frenetic Cuban rhythms dominates, all counterpoint and syncopation, with the musicians reeling off their considerable chops throughout (guitarist Fareed Haque deserves special mention). The insanely paced take on Dizzy Gillespie's "Tanga" is incandescent, with blazing solos all around, and superhuman drumming from Mark Walker. The high-minded musicianship is undeniable here, but the Latin groove rules. In addition to REUNION's stellar artistic merits, it is a dance album extraordinaire.
Reunion was the first time that Paquito D'Rivera and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval recorded together since D'Rivera's defection in 1980; Sandoval had recently left Cuba himself. The co-leaders are joined by a superb band: pianist Danilo Perez, acoustic guitarist Fareed Haque, bassist David Finck, drummer Mark Walker, and Giovanni Hidalgo on conga. The group mostly performs originals plus a couple Chucho Valdes songs, "Body and Soul" (a showcase for Sandoval) and Dizzy Gillespie's "Tanga." Plenty of fireworks occur on this consistently heated Afro-Cuban jazz set and the co-leaders clearly inspire each other. When will they have their next reunion? Paquito D'Rivera: Cuba-born and New York-based saxophonist and clarinet player, Paquito D'Rivera has balanced a career in Latin jazz with commissions as a classical composer ...
