Recorded in Los Angeles, California and New York, New York between 1946 & 1954. Includes liner notes by Brian Priestley.
Slim Gaillard was a willful absurdist who took the swinging, light-hearted jump blues of Louis Jordan and injected a healthy dose of goofy surrealism. On LAUGHING IN RHYTHM, the definitive Gaillard collection, the singer/multi-instrumentalist leads his large band through one humorous romp after another, approximating the language of other cultures ("Arabian Boogie," "Gomen Nasai"), cross-pollinating ethnic traditions ("Mishugana Mambo"), and celebrating the glory of America's favorite snack food ("Potato Chips.") While these tracks, all culled from Gaillard's classic Verve sessions, are full of Gaillard's unique Cab Calloway-via-Lord Buckley humor, he and his band are jazzmen first and humorists second. Consequently, LAUGHING IN RHYTHM is as pleasing to the ear as it is to the funny bone.

Q (8/94, p.124) - 3 Stars - Good - "...as strong an introduction to a multi-faceted nutcase as you could want..." JazzTimes (12/94, p.128) - "...To write of Slim Gaillard's legacy is immediately to take oneself too serio-rootie-oreenie. Dig? But here's a challenge....Try not to smile...laugh out loud, during any one of these selections....has more fun with language...awright-oreetie?..."
