Only his third session as a leader, 1961's WE FREE KINGS finds multi-instrumentalist Roland Kirk (he added the Rahsaan in 1969) transplanted to New York from his native Midwest and signed to Mercury Records, where he'd remain for the next seven years. With this classic album, Kirk shook off detractors who dismissed him as a novelty (for his revival of the vaudeville trick of playing up to three reeds at once) and established himself as a paragon of modern jazz.
Beginning with a typically idiosyncratic reworking of Coltrane's "Blues for Alice," Kirk only occasionally steps into the free jazz style implied by the album's title, notably on the first recorded version of his legendary multi-horn showcase "Three for the Festival." Recorded in two different no-nonsense trio settings, WE FREE KINGS showcases Kirk's astonishingly varied brilliance in a suitably stripped-down context. Saxophonist Peter Epstein is nothing if not distinctive; his thoughtful, unmistakable playing has been a highlight of recordings by Michael Cain, Jerry Granelli, and many others. Epstein has assembled a quartet of alarming sensitivity, able to provide his experiential pieces with the delicate touch they deserve. Young utilized his artist loft in New York City's Flower District as a forum and meeting place for many jazz musicians to stretch their wares, amid other extracurricular activities, during the mid-1950s up until 1965. With this sharply dressed 2000 two-CD release, the folks at Jazz Magnet offer the listener over two hours of previously unreleased jam material spanning 1957 through 1965, featuring tenor sax legend Zoot Sims, trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, pianist Dave McKenna, bassist Steve Swallow, and many others of note. Young originally recorded these performances on his Webcor tape machine, and the sonic characteristics are perhaps no less inferior than some of those dearly beloved Charlie Parker LPs that have subsequently been reissued on CD format.
