This is the one that put Bossa Nova on the Map
This heart-achingly, splendidly beautiful music represents a series of vibrant tunes employed as the soundtrack of the landmark 1959 Brazilian film "Orfeo Negro" ("Black Orpheus), except for the last selection on the CD which is a concert recording entitled the "Bola Sete Medley," wherein 3 separate tunes written for the film are performed as a medley by the Brazilian guitarist Bola Sete and his band. If you like Bossa Nova and/or the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim, the Gilbertos, Luis Bonfa, Stan Getz, and Charlie Byrd, you're gonna love this CD. I believe I have heard better versions of some of the songs on this CD, but never more spirited or more faithful to the Brazilian environment from whence the tunes originated. And those simple facts make all the selections both precious and highly memorable. And for the record, I've never heard better versions of "Mahna de Carnaval" or "Samba de Orfeu" (you'll love the way the children's chorus completes the samba). Then after you listen to the CD, go rent the film on video (VHS may be the only medium available, not sure about this). As you would guess, music of this caliber provides a memorable setting for a terrific movie based on the Greek myth of "Orpheus and Eurydice."
