This 1957 session brings together two of the most important tenor saxophonists in jazz history. Coleman Hawkins is known as the father of the jazz sax, while Webster may be its greatest balladeer. COLEMAN HAWKINS ENCOUNTERS BEN WEBSTER highlights the talents of both tenor men nicely, with Hawkins and Webster consistently complementing each other's playing. In fact, they develop a kind of conversational interplay that is quite beautiful, particularly on the gentle "It Never Entered My Mind" and the slowly swinging "Shine on Harvest Moon." Although the rest of the band consists of stellar musicians (including pianist Oscar Peterson and guitarist Herb Ellis), they concede the spotlight to Hawkins and Webster, whose dual saxophones more than carry the record. Other standout tracks include the sultry ballad "Tangerine" and the Latin-flavored "La Rosita."

| | Oscar Peterson Night Train CD (1963)
We Get Requests CD music
$15.35 Master jazz pianist Oscar Peterson had his longest-running trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, and NIGHT TRAIN may be their finest moment. The repertoire here is comprised mostly of standards, although the choices seem deliberate. In treatments of jazz chestnuts like "C-Jam Blues" and "Georgia On My Mind," the trio works inside these well-known songs, painting over familiar colors and re-working traditional melodies, while staying true to the spirit of each tune. The chemistry between Thigpen, Brown, and Peterson is unassailable. Peterson, in particular, is at the top of his game here, running the whole history of jazz through his dexterous, nimble fingers with an in-the-pocket ease not always apparent on his earlier recordings.
NIGHT TRAIN was produced by Norman Granz, who had already sold Verve Records to MGM, but continued to record his favorite artists, of whom Peterson was one. The production is superb, and translates especially well via remastering. The Verve re-issue features additional tracks, including alternate takes, rehearsals, full versions of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Volare," and an incomplete take of Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." | | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
We Get Requests music CDs
$7.69 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness of Muddy's baritone is showcased effectively here, with more room than usual for his voice to resonate.
The low-key setting allows Muddy to explore a fuller dynamic range as well. From the romantic yearning of "Long Distance Call" to the fatalism of the chain gang song "My Captain," Muddy's voice expresses entire worlds of emotion with only subtle dynamic changes. On FOLK SINGER's more downhearted cuts, there's a doomy, ominous quality that rivals the deepest emotional journeys of John Lee Hooker. By scaling down, Muddy managed to make his songs, guitar and voice seem exponentially magnified. Though it's one of his quietest albums, FOLK SINGER screams with naked emotion.
Recorded at Tel Mar Recording Studios, Chicago, Illinois in September 1963 and April 1964. Originally released on Chess (1483). Includes liner notes by Bob Schnieders ...

| | Diego Cortez Stuzzicadenti 1997-99 CD (2000)
We Get Requests CD music
$14.69 Prior to this 2000 release, Diego Cortez had been working more or less behind the scenes in the experimental areas where ambient and sampled music intersect. He has long been an active participant in the art world at large, working in visual as well as sonic media.
Recorded during from 1997 to 1999, the album's 15 pieces were composed for acoustic piano and mixed media. The latter feature such potent collaborators as DJ Spooky, Arto Lindsay, and Ryuichi Sakamoto. While Cortez' music bears some sonic characteristics in common with ambient music, it is actually too full of foreground surprises to fall squarely into that category. "Delta" is a fairly straightforward duet for piano and the trumpet of Butch Morris. Subtly relentless bass playing dances around the minimalist piano architecture of "Jobim's Existence," while wind up music boxes and tape manipulation on "Between Your Face and Your Face" link this piece to such mid-20th century experimental composers as Morton Subotnick and Milton Babbitt.
