In First Circle, the Pat Metheny Group settled into a lineup that lasted for quite a while -- with Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Steve Rodby, and new drummer Paul Wertico forming the core quartet. The ever-restless Metheny also mixes up the music, not quite leaving the Brazilian glide behind but coming up with some fascinating permutations always affixed with his personal stamp. "Forward March," the album opener, is a bizarre parody full of detuned instruments and half-cocked trumpet from Mays; one wonders if this was directed at a few silly skirmishes of the day (Grenada? the Falklands?). "The First Circle" has Brazilian elements, but now in the service of a grander architectural context, while nothing could be simpler and yet more sophisticated than the delicate ballad "If I Could." "End of the Game" might be the best track on the record, equipped with a beautiful pop-flavored set of tunes and harmonies, with a rock beat fused to the floating ambience of South America as personified by the new Argentine percussionist/vocalist Pedro Aznar. "Praise," the closer, is an out-and-out rock tune, an affirmative flip side of "Forward March" and the last of a series of delightful surprises. ~ Richard S. Ginell

First Circle album
$9.75 Josh Thompson first received attention as the professional songwriter who penned the title track for Jason Michael Carroll's second album, Growing Up Is Getting Old, so it's not entirely a surprise that Thompson's 2010 debut, Way Out Here, is cut from the same nostalgic cloth as Growing Up, containing paeans to small towns ruled by John Wayne, Johnny Cash, and John Deere, and laying all blame at the feet of Waylon Jennings. Clearly, with all this name-dropping -- and that's only the tip of the iceberg, as there's ...

$13.39 With the exception of the opening number (which is from 1935) and one song apiece from 1940 (the two-sided hit "No Name Jive") and 1941, the music on this collection dates from 1937-1939. A dozen of the selections are Hoagy Carmichael compositions and two apiece feature Louis Armstrong (who interacts vocally with Pee Wee Hunt on "Rockin' Chair" and "Lazybones"), the Merry Macs, and Carmichael himself ("Washboard Blues" and "Little Old Lady"). While none of those renditions are definitive, they are enjoyable to hear. In addition, there are some swinging obscurities along with hit versions of "Smoke Rings" and "Casa Loma Stomp," both of which are remakes. The Casa Loma Orchestra lost some of its musical ...

When you consider that 1979 was the year that launched Spyro Gyra onto the pop charts with their number one hit "Morning Dance," for what was essentially a new style of jazz, their achievements seem all the more astounding. With the release of In Modern Times, the group commemorates 25 years of recording and a move to Heads Up International with this fresh, new collection. The enhanced CD, complete with a video and biography, features the talents of its co-founder, Jay Beckenstein, on saxophones, Tom Schuman on keyboards, Julio Fernandez on guitars, Scott Ambush on bass, and Joel Rosenblatt on drums. The 12 original concepts written by members of the group, the inimitable Chuck Loeb, and co-writers Jeremy Wall and Phil Magallanes, keep the listening interesting, sweet, and real. The opening track, "After Hours," is a sultry tune featuring orchestral enhancement, subtle horn charts, and creates a mood that signals the listener is in for a great time. Their retro soul tribute to Grover Washington, ...
