Thanks in no small part to ECM founder Manfred Eicher's patience and indulgence, here we have another of Keith Jarrett's myriad "special projects" -- two CDs of music recorded on a clavichord. This carries Jarrett's anti-electric crusade to a real extreme, the clavichord being a keyboard from J.S. Bach's day, obsolete for over 200 years. The instrument produces a gentle pinging sound like a harpsichord crossed with a zither (the amplified Hohner Clavinet is the closest sound in our time), and Jarrett occasionally tries to stretch the instrument's limited possibilities, hammering percussively on the close-miked strings. Yet for the most part, Jarrett reins in his world-class technique in order to make unpretentiously minimal music on this ancient keyboard. Some of it sounds like folk music, some like new age contemplation, there are convincing neo-baroque musings, and a few of these untitled though numbered selections kick into a higher gear. Sometimes this music is charming...But hey, they also laughed when Keith started putting out massive sets of solo piano... ~ Richard S. Ginell

Allman Brothers Band Dreams CDs  (1989) Box Set

Book Of Ways songs
CD $38.09  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts. Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson. Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection nor the gift to hardcore fans that, say, THE BOOTLEG SERIES is to Dylan-philes. DREAMS' strengths are considerable. First and foremost, the box contains nearly five wall-to-wall hours of great music. By including everything from early demos to Gregg Allman and Dickie Betts' solo material, DREAMS does a great job of tracing the group's musical evolution from hippie blues band to kings of Southern rock. And, while the unreleased studio version of "Statesboro Blues" included here isn't definitive, it's still mighty good-as are the set's other rarities. Start your Allman Brothers ...

Ted Brown Free Spirit CD  (1989)

Book Of Ways album
CD $14.55  Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections are "Trane's Slo Blues," "Lester Leaps In" and "Lover Come Back to Me." Quite possibly this is the definitive Ted Brown set to acquire; certainly it is highly recommended to lovers of straight-ahead ...

Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs  (1990)

Book Of Ways CD music
CD $15.29  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos. This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts and singles. From the classic anthem "Pickin' Up the Pieces," which kicks things off, through "You Better Think Twice," "C'mon," "Kind Woman," "From the Inside," "A Good Feelin' to Know," "Crazy Eyes," and on and on, this is wonderful music, ahead of its time in many ways. If Poco had arrived on the scene in the early '90s, they would have been kings of the country charts. Of course, without Poco, country music wouldn't have taken on the rock trappings that it did in the '80s and '90s. As it was, the band was considered too country for the Top 40 rock format of the time, and too rock & roll for country radio. This set is the ...

Recorded between 1967 & 1983. Includes liner notes by Jim Ladd. Released to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Doors album, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS supercedes all former Doors compilations. At two discs and 34 tracks, this is quite comprehensive for a band whose key lineup released only half a dozen albums. In addition to all the expected hits like "Light My Fire," "Hello I Love You," and "Roadhouse Blues," this compilation delves much deeper into the catalogue with fan favorites such as "Not To Touch the Earth" and "Wishful Sinful," as well as a handful of previously obscure rarities. Remastered and newly remixed by original engineer Bruce Botnick and the surviving members of the Doors, THE VERY BEST OF THE DOORS is a solid tribute to the band. The first Doors album was an important development in the evolution of rock, representing the dark underbelly of the '60s counterculture, the Jekyll to the Beatles/Beach Boys' Hyde. The Doors were the antithesis of windblown Californian pop. Dark, brooding and alienated, every element of the quartet's metier was unveiled on their debut album. In Jim Morrison they posessed one of rock's authoritative voices, ...

Time Again: Brubeck Revisited Vol. 1
Joe Gilman Time Again: Brubeck Revisited Vol. 1 CD  (2004)

Book Of Ways album
CD $14.29  Audio Samples (MP3 Available for Download)
It isn't every day that an artist devotes almost an entire release to the music of Dave Brubeck, but pianist Joe Gilman did well enough with this studio outing that he delighted Brubeck himself with this recording, the first in what is hopefully a long series. He is joined by two fine young musicians attending the Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific, bassist Joe Sanders and drummer Justin Brown (both of whom played in a trio with Brubeck during the Master's Concert at the 2004 IAJE Conference to great applause). Gilman, who is also a full-time professor at the Institute, selected works written through Brubeck's long career, including a few that may not have yet been released by the composer. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" is full of twists and humor as the trio plays with the rhythm of this famous piece written in 9/8 time. Another well-known song, "In Your Own Sweet Way" (which has essentially become a jazz standard), matches Gilman's inventive bassline with his turbulent right hand, removing it far from its easygoing ballad origins. "Weep No More," written to let Brubeck's young wife, Iola, know that he was glad to be returning safely to her after serving in World War II, is a buoyant bop treatment with intricate basslines by Sanders and cooking piano by the leader. Iola Brubeck is also honored in "For Iola," which has a playfulness suggesting a group of children in Gilman's interpretation. Both "Tender Woman" and "Recuerdo" date from a long out of print Mexican-flavored LP meeting with Gerry Mulligan called Compadres. "Tender Woman" was conceived as a mellow ballad at a steady tempo, but the trio liberates it with a bit of adventurous playing by the leader. "Recuerdo" remains a sauntering, slightly jaunty work. "Theme for June," written by Howard Brubeck (Dave's older brother), has long been a part of his concert repertoire. Gilman's dreamy piano is accented by Brown's sensitive brushwork in a moving performance. "Love and Anger" is a little-known tune that Brubeck may not have yet recorded and released, but Gilman's interpretation is full of tension and sometimes suggests an avant-garde influence. Brown is showcased extensively in the exciting closer, appropriately named "Curtain Time." Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden Read a review from "ALL ABOUT JAZZ"http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/review.php?id=11604In November 2001, a local Sacramento jazz group that I perform with called Capital Jazz Project presented a concert of all Dave Brubeck music. The director of the Brubeck Institute, JB Dyas, was in attendance and asked if the group would repeat the performance at the Brubeck festival the following year. In the meantime, JB asked me if I would teach at the Brubeck Colony (a Summer camp for outstanding highschool jazz musicians). He also asked if I would come in and teach Dave's music to the Institute students for a week in December 2002.After teaching Dave's music to the students there, I submitted a report to JB as to my endeavors. JB copied the letter to Dave Brubeck. Dave was impressed, and sent me all of his published music because I thought there might be some other compositions I might like to share with the students. I thought it was such a nice gesture from Dave and I took many of the tunes over to the Institute to play with Joe and Justin (the bassist and drummer at the Institute). As we read thru the tunes, they instantly sounded modern and fresh because of the approach of the rhythm section. I rearranged the tunes to fit both Dave's ideals and the talents of the band. I thought the least I could do was record what we had done and send it to Dave. He ...

Freddie Hubbard Open Sesame CD  (1960) (Import) Japan; 24 Bit Remastered

Book Of Ways CD music
CD $23.65
This is part of Blue Note Records "Rudy Van Gelder Editions" series. This album's title and cover welcome the listener to trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's initial outing as a bandleader, and it's a fine Blue Note debut. (Prior to this release, Hubbard had played with many East Coast jazz luminaries, most notably Sonny Rollins and Eric Dolphy.) Recorded in 1960, OPEN SESAME features a stellar band that includes pianist McCoy Tyner and saxophonist Tina Brooks. The swinging title track, penned by Brooks, showcases the horns, but it also allows the rest of the band to get into a tight groove. The following tune finds the ensemble easing into Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke's classic ballad "But Beautiful," with Hubbard and Tyner taking center stage for much ...

Billie Holiday Masters Of Jazz CD  (2006) (Import) Denmark

Book Of Ways MP3 Album
CD $12.85
This Storyville series is always a mixed bag, but their goal is to be one. They try to offer -- consistently so -- the best material from all stages of an individual artist's career. Billie Holiday is a case in point. There are some gorgeous early and middle performances here, such as the opening reading of Duke Ellington's "Do Nothin' Till You Hear from Me" with Teddy Wilson, the live "Billie's Blues," and "Lover Man." There are also some later cuts here that are on the other side of Holiday's beautiful voice, such as the live "Strange Fruit," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and a stellar version of "I Cover the Waterfront." Most of these cuts are live or from radio transcriptions, and generally this is not the place to start with the great vocalist, but is more for serious collectors only. ~ Thom Jurek Recording information: Apollo Theatre, NY (01/18/1944-10/??/1951); Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA (01/18/1944-10/??/1951); Los Angeles, CA (01/18/1944-10/??/1951); ...

Book Of Ways album

Ryan Silver hit the music scene at a young age. At only 18 he recorded a full length CD titled, “Cheap Seats.” Silver recorded the CD in New York with producer Craig Dreyer. Dreyer, whose past clientele has included Dispatch and Pete Francis, was very impressed with Silver’s talent and musicianship. Also included on the record is the late night show Conan O’Brien’s second drummer, James Wormworth and several other top studio session musicians. Silver then hit it big with Rob Fraboni, (who has worked with The Rolling Stones and U2) who mastered the CD alongside Dreyer. Silver has much performing experience and says he loves playing live, but the CD and studio recordings are the true showing of a musician and his/her work. Silver has headlined many shows and events, and plans to keep touring/performing. ...
