MUSHROOM JAZZ is a continuous in-the-mix recording by DJ Mark Farina This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Farina's hypnotic dancefloor jazz creates a trippy background mix and an enjoyable look at some promising new artists for those willing to listen. That being said, it's not a seamless mix, containing some jarring transitions. Tracks that don't fade into the background are the international hit single by Blue Boy, "Remember Me," and Mr. Electric Triangle's "Bossa Nova." As much as he forges a unique, mellow sound, he is inescapably influenced by DJs like Gilles Peterson. ~ Ryan Randall Goble

Catchy riffs and vamps occasionally rise to the top of the mind-expanding, multi-layered mix..." JazzTimes (4/97, p.65) - "...a remarkably solid collection of subdued instrumental (live and sampled) textures, tight hip-hop beats and retro funk..." Mushroom Jazz
$14.19 The DJ KICKS series of mixes was inaugurated by the K7 electronica label in 1995, when techno went mainstream and moved beyond dance clubs and into living rooms. By 1999, techno stars like Carl Craig and Kruder & Dorfmeister had contributed to the series, and it was time for Washington DC duo Thievery Corporation to craft their own DJ KICKS mix. One of the finest offerings of the DJ KICKS series, this set maintains a rather low-key mood throughout, in keeping with Thievery Corporation's usual modus operandi. Nevertheless, the sounds on offer are wide-ranging, including everything from the old-school lounge sounds of Les Baxter to the dub stylings of Rockers Hi-Fi and the warm, glowing acid-jazz sounds of Jazzanova, all intermixed with the Corporation's own distinctive downtempo cuts. Just as sampladelic as their debut album, Thievery Corporation's entry in Studio !K7's growing DJ-Kicks mix album series charts the duo's interest in not only blunted trip-hop but also Brazilian music, exotica, and easy listening. Featuring a few of their own tracks ("It Takes a Thief," "Coming from the Top") plus tracks by Rockers Hi-Fi and Fun-da-Mental, DJ Kicks is a solid chillout album. ~ Keith Farley
Artists & titles selected by Washington, D.C. based DJ's Thievery Corporation (Eric Hilton & Rob Garza). Features many great lounge / chill-out moments, including cuts from Les Baxter, A Forest Mighty Black, Jazzanova & many more.

With a clever twist on the term "acid jazz," Mark Farina returns with Mushroom Jazz, Vol. 3. Lining up all the editions of the series, the upward growth of Farina's mixing skills and track selection is evident. Farina also shows evidence that he's comfortable with the mixer as a tool, as he tweaks and hollows out songs without abusing the power. This installation has a strong concentration in hip-hop twisted with jazz and rainy-day, down-tempo house. Farina's mixing is smooth as he goes from one genre to the next, creating ...

$16.45 Mechanical Bull – A Million YesterdaysWoodstock MusicWorksGrowing up a preacher’s son is never an easy task, butapparently that lifestyle can lead to a killer record as ChasePierson of Mechanical Bull has proved with A MillionYesterdays on Woodstock MusicWorks.Every few years Pierson moved whenever the good lord told hisfather to do so. As an adult, the wandering didn’t stop asPierson has lived in Boston as a crew chief on an ambulance, proceeding to Texas as a mechanic and tow truck driver and toKansas as an appliance repairman. These cross-countryendeavors are the ingredients that went into concocting AMillion Yesterdays. The six-piece country folk band has been a local hit and anunderground phenomenon due to their rustic, unique sound andtheir tragically humorous lyrics. The follow up to last year’s All Hat No Cattle features compellingnew tunes written by singer/songwriter and ringleader ChasePierson – and sung by Pierson and Avalon Peacock. Peacock’svocals are intrinsic to Mechanical Bull’s sound. She is thedaughter of legendary composer Annette Peacock, and hasperformed with artists such as George Clinton and Coheed andCambria.Labelmates George Quinn, Chris Zaloom, J-Bird Bowman andDavid Malachowski round out the band, while renownedkeyboardist John Medeski chimes in on B3 for the track “LukeWarm Coffee. The juxtaposition of Pierson’s gruff growl andPeacock’s angelic, yet dark pipes makes for a sound new andinnovative.Add in Zaloom’s slinky steel and dobro,Malachowski’s bendy blues licks, Quinn’s lovely mandolin,Bowman’s infectious groove, and Adam Widoff (Lenny Kravitz,Toshi Reagon, David Torn, Kate Pierson, Mercury Rev) on, well, everything, A Million Yesterdays comes fresh out of the ...
