FUSE is an Enhanced audio CD containing regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files, including interviews, lyrics and biographical information. Joe Henry's always been artistically restless, moving from the big production/poetic ... Full Descriptionmeandering of MURDER OF CROWS to the winning Jayhawks-backed country-rock of SHORT MAN'S ROOM and the more free-form, experimental TRAMPOLINE. It's admirable that Henry desired to move on from the roots-rock form he'd so thoroughly mastered, and TRAMPOLINE found him trying out new creative methods without landing on anything definitive. Its followup FUSE is where all that searching pays off. The album mixes hip-hop-inflected rhythms, R&B touches and a loose, Mitchell Froom-ish flair for gonzo studio tricks. Henry marries his ambitious arrangement ideas with some poetic but focused lyrics, making for one of the most literally "progressive" late-'90s singer-songwriter efforts you're likely to hear this side of Ron Sexsmith or the criminally underexposed Richard Julian.
Personnel includes: Joe Henry (vocals, guitar, organ, keyboards, bass, percussion); Jakob Dylan (vocals); Randy Jacobs (guitar); Chris Whitley (guitar); Jamie Muhoberac (piano, organ, keyboards); Rami Jaffee (electric piano, vibraphone); Daniel Lanois (bass, clave); Jennifer Condos, Ready Freddie Washington, Greg Richling (bass); Carla Azar, Curt Bisquera (drums).

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Spin (5/99, p.152) - 8 (out of 10) - "...Next to Henry's enchantingly elusive new album, FUSE, his breakthrough TRAMPOLINE seems like a baby step. The songs still have gorgeous bone structure, but by sacrificing their meticulousness, Henry achieves a more enigmatic beauty..." Entertainment Weekly (3/19/99, p.106) - "...Dark, brooding, and beautiful--with disarmingly offbeat lyrics about obsessive desire, angels of death, and a pet monkey--FUSE deepens with each spin but is so moodily low-key that depressives are forewarned to stock up on St. John's Wort." - Rating: B+ CMJ (3/8/99, p.24) - "...a jazzy, groove-oriented vibe...Henry seems to depend less on melody here, instead focusing on his lyrics and the scratchy passion in his voice, which coalesces with pulsing bass lines, searing guitar effects and strings to form stark, beautiful pictures." Dirty Linen (6-7/99, p.61) - "...a beautifully constructed and lovely record....Lyrically, it is complex, demanding and perhaps demented..." Mojo (Publisher) (10/99, p.101) - "...On FUSE the vibe is more urban - a mellow, jazzy sort of urban....Every track...is superbly crafted, powerfully melodic and incisive..." Fuse album
$10.09 In a different world, Kelly Willis would be a huge country star. Blessed with an emotional, pure voice, songwriting talent and good looks, she's the whole package and then some. But she didn't quite fit in with the Nashville scene, so she's based in Texas, where she's been dubbed "The Voice of Austin." Her previous albums only hinted at the full scope of Willis' artistic vision, but her fourth full-length release WHAT I DESERVE is the first one on which it truly shines through.
Willis wrote or co-wrote half the tracks on the album, but she's also chosen material by her husband Bruce Robison, Nick Drake, Paul Kelly and even the Replacements' Paul Westerberg. It's her unmistakable voice which ties it all together, whether she's crooning her way through the dreamy "Not Long for This World" and "Time Has Told Me," getting bluesy on "Got A Feelin' For Ya" or tackling upbeat numbers like "Take Me Down." Highlights include the title track and great versions of Westerberg's "They're Blind" and Robison's "Wrapped." Listeners who find mainstream country music too slick and obvious will enjoy Willis' down-to-earth, highly personal take on the genre.

Fuse CD music
$10.85 All tracks have been digitally mastered using HDCD technology.
CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Can't Let Go" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Williams's fans waited a long six years for this album, as Lucinda went through music business hassles and a revolving door of producers. The reward for their patience is an album full of rootsy, heartfelt observations that alternately rock and mourn. CAR WHEELS is full of songs about loss and longing, like "Metal Firecracker," "Drunken Angel" and "I Lost It," but even when she's bemoaning her own lack of happiness on the bluesy "Joy," she lets loose with so much passion that it seems inevitable she'll find her emotional center again.
Produced largely by Steve Earle, CAR WHEELS is immersed in that late-'90s alt-country sound, full of slide guitar, accordion, dobro and other Americana touches. It's a tribute to Williams's unique artistic vision that she distinguishes herself from the No Depression crowd by virtue of her idiosyncratic songwriting. Full of lust, sadness and the ...
| | Wilco Summer Teeth CD (1999)
Fuse music CDs
$9.85 Moving beyond A.M.'s Uncle Tupelo-oriented country-rock, Wilco's double-length BEING THERE explored the sonic vistas of the Stones and Big Star. SUMMER TEETH takes things a step further. A loose, inspired masterwork of rootsy power-pop in the grand mid-'70s tradition, it's the greatest album Alex Chilton never made. With perfect pop melodies and a knack for throwing things askew via left-field sonic elements, this is as far from the country as Wilco could be.
Jeff Tweedy's ragged-but-right voice is the essence of rock & roll--the travails detailed in the lyrics seem undeniably his own. Though his days of paying homage to Acuff-Rose seem long gone, Tweedy and his compatriots still sound engagingly organic on SUMMER TEETH. Even if they're closer to Badfinger after a few beers than to the post-Tupelo alt-country of Tweedy's ...
| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Fuse songs
$10.85 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast ...

Fuse album
$7.69 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Singer-songwriter Joe Henry has moved through a number of stylistic phases throughout his career, from Van Morrison-like impressionism to country-rock to Tom Waits/Beck-inspired sonic experimentation. His restless artistic nature may have filled his catalog with peaks and valleys, but SCAR represents the first time all the aspects of Henry's muse have come together in a satisfying whole. Aided by no less estimable a figure than Ornette Coleman (!) who lends moody sax to a few of the tracks, Henry lets his image-heavy lyrics run free over a broad soundscape that mixes the acoustic, electric, and electronic in an extremely organic way.

Fuse songs
$7.49 The Doobie Brothers shuffled personnel a bit after their debut album, changing bass players and adding a second drummer. For whatever reason, this sophomore effort was the one that kicked off their long streak as one of the most popular bands in America. The basic sound of TOULOUSE STREET isn't really all that different from the Doobies' previous effort. There's a similar mix of acoustic guitars, gospel harmonies, and overall post-hippie mellowness.
