Every weekend since 1988, roughly five times a week, in a small space tucked away above a funeral home in a decidedly un-trendy, un-yuppified, and unobtrusive neighborhood on Chicago's north side, a small ensemble of writers and actors known as the Neo-Futurists have been quietly staging one of the most thrillingly original, astonishingly consistent, wildly entertaining and exhilaratingly theatrical live stage productions to be found anywhere in American theater. Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind is a rare commodity in today's stage scene: a low budget experimental theater production that is as accessible and entertaining as it is bold and intelligent. Because of its late-night time slot, carnival atmosphere, frequently side-splitting content and short form structure -- 30 original plays performed in 60 minutes, with new material every week -- the show might easily be confused with the sort of sketch comedy revues performed by the Neo-Futurists' more famous neighbors, Second City. But the literate and discerning quality of the writing, which ranges in style and theme from performance poetry to socio-political commentary to amusing personal diary to absurdist "happening," sets the show apart from improv-based light comedy. It is this careful attention to the music of the written word that makes for a remarkably smooth transition from stage to compact disc. The first Too Much Light CD draws 33 of the best plays from the production's nine-year history, providing the Neo-Futurists' large and loyal cadre of regular attendees an unprecedented opportunity to take home a small portion of the live show's ephemeral magic. The compilation naturally focuses on audio-friendly material that relies on words and sounds rather than sight gags or inventive staging. But even within this narrowed subsection of their catalog, the selections on the CD reflect the stylistic diversity of a typical night at the Neo-Futurarium. There is "Title," a hilarious feat of verbal reductionism by the show's creator, Greg Allen, that strips a conversation down to terse stage directions. There is "Twice on the Pipes," David Kodeski's lyrical tribute to noisy apartment radiators. Ayun Halliday's "Happy Ending" presents a scathing eulogy for Richard Nixon that begins "Once there was a miserable old bastard." And Lusia Strus' ten word opus, "Lessons for Living a la Lusia #13," muses sagely that "If you don't open your bills, you don't owe them." The quality of the recordings sometimes leaves something to be desired -- about a third of the plays were recorded live and the exuberance of the generally very young audience can sometimes overwhelm the performers -- but this only serves to underscore the singularity of the live experience. The Too Much Light CD is not a substitute for the stage show, but it works just fine as a preview and even better as a souvenir. ~ Evan Cater
Coming up on its 20th anniversary, the long-running but ever-changing late-night theatrical event from Chicago also known as "30 Plays In 60 Minutes" was captured in this studio recording specifically designed as an audio-only experience. The famed ensemble founded by Greg Allen has included poet Lisa Buscani, author Ayun Halliday, "Urinetown" creator Greg Kotis, director David Kodeski, and Screeching Weasel guitarist John "Jughead" Pierson.
