Washington, DC chamber-rock quartet Laconic Chamber represents a departure for Camera Obscura, the Australian label best known as a stronghold of neo-psychedelia. Influences as far ranging as '80s art punk (especially the Raincoats and Swell Maps), the Velvet Underground, Throwing Muses, traditional and modern folk, Rex, Low, and indie-orchestral ensembles--to name but a few--are apparent. But, like the rest of the label's roster, Laconic Chamber offers something at once familiar yet fresh, a beguiling marriage of musics both old and new.
Dorothy Geller's efficiently sculpted vocals and guitar are the heart of Laconic Chamber's lovely, languorous sound, contrasting with Evan Shurak's (ex-Eggs) fluidly jazzy percussion and the soothing scrape of James Wolf's violin. Eric Brun, whose probing basslines are integral in accentuating the album's sensuous substance, adds lilting clarinet to "Striking Noon(e)." Despite the presence of these three men, Geller's artily oblique compositions and enigmatic lyrics play up the feminine feel of A HISTORY OF EPIDEMICS. Such songs as the halting "Darker," the bewitching "Judas," "She Must Have Bled," and the wracked title track exude shades of a complex, simmering, and siren-like sensuality that almost as overpowering as it is alluring.
Arranger: Laconic Chamber.
Personnel: Dorothy Geller (vocals, acoustic guitar); James Wolf (electric guitar, violin); Eric Bruns (clarinet); Evan Shurak (drums, percussion).
Recording information: Stillness Sound Facility.

History Of Epidemics songs
$10.75 With this album, years of personnel changes ended for Fleetwood Mac with the departure of guitarist Bob Welch. The remaining core of the group (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie) invited guitarist/vocalist Lindsey Buckingham and singer Stevie Nicks to join, and thus began the most commercially successful period for Fleetwood Mac. With 3 strong songwriters in Nicks, Buckingham and Christine McVie, FLEETWOOD MAC was their first number-1 album.
It's unfair to say that Fleetwood Mac had no pop pretensions prior to the addition of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks to the lineup in 1975. When they were lead by Bob Welch they often flirted with pop, even recording the first version of the unabashedly smooth and sappy "Sentimental Lady," which would later be one of the defining soft rock hits of the late '70s. Still, there's no denying that 1975's Fleetwood Mac represents not just the rebirth of the band, but in effect a second debut for the group -- the introduction of a band that would dominate the sound of American and British mainstream pop for the next seven years. In fact, in retrospect, it's rather stunning how thoroughly Buckingham and Nicks, who had previously recorded as a duo and were romantically entangled in the past, overtook the British blues band. As soon as the Californian duo came onboard, Fleetwood Mac turned into a West Coast pop/rock band, transforming the very identity of the band and pushing the band's other songwriter, keyboardist Christine McVie, to a kindred soft rock sound. It could have all been too mellow if it weren't for the nervy, restless spirit of Buckingham, whose insistent opener, "Monday Morning," sets the tone for the rest of the album, as well the next few years of the group's career. Surging with a pushily melodic chorus and a breezy Californian feel, the song has little to do with anything the Mac had done before this, ...

History Of Epidemics CD music
$10.09 Drawing immediate comparisons to the Foo Fighters, Los Angeles' The Kite-Eating Tree uses guitar power and offbeat prose to shape Method Fail Repeat. If Mike Hunter's vocal performances are credible, his angst steals the show on tunes like "Hollywood Hates You" and the nonsensical "Softer Seems the Pavement." If the latter, the disc's opener, resembles Chavez, it's hardly a bad thing, with aggressive chording giving it and "Through the Width of a Straw" the kind of six-string force that has been absent since the passing of grunge. It's not exactly distinct, but from the punky "Hope Is a Passenger" to the melodic "Like Butterscotch," Method Fail Repeat is a solid, (and at ten songs) succinct album that brings the reliability back to alt-rock. ~ John D. Luerssen
"The Kite-Eating Tree's cleverness doesn't end with the band's unique name. It also spans throughout this California outfit's 10-track post-hardcore offering, a collection that shimmers with beauty the way broken glass looks through sunlight. Sometimes jagged, sometimes rugged, but always engaging, tracks like the punchy "Through the Width of a Straw" mix the hard rock of Foo Fighters with the emotional wringing of Far, while the noisy melodics of "All Swedish, No Finish" and "Retrograde" have enough firepower to stir up a pit, yet enough heartfelt sentiment to evoke a group singalong. Blurring the edges between today's arena rock and small club indie rock, The Kite-Eating Tree expertly tugs at your senses with the wide range of styles and superb songwriting skills. If you think the current wave of rock bands today is getting stale, let this quartet's debut release try and change your perception." Mike SOS - In Music We Trust - May 2004 BIOGRAPHY:"Here's how my weird childhood shaped my ethos," waxes The Kite-Eating Tree's singer-guitarist Mike Hunter, "when I was kid, my uncle gave me a piece of advice. On day one of any new school, he said to go up to the biggest kid in class and punch him in the face." Hunter chuckles and then continues in the reflective tone usually reserved for the telling of first kisses, "He added that while I might get my ass kicked once in a while, no kid at that school would ever mess with me again. Well, I did get my ass kicked a few times, because I moved at least ten times when I was a kid. But people never fucked with me after those fights. ...
