trombonist presents classic entertaining jazz in the tradition of Louis Armstrong & Bob Scobey, feat. Connie Jones-cnt, John Otto-clt/sax, Paul Asaro-pno, John Bany-bss +
Personnel includes: Jim Beebe (trombone); Connie Jones (cornet). Personnel: Jim Beebe (trombone); Judi K. (vocals); John Otto (clarinet, alto saxophone); Connie Jones (cornet); Paul Asaro (piano); Johnie Faren (drums). Liner Note Author: Paige Van Vorst. Recording information: Riverside Studio, Chicago, IL (1995). Photographer: Monique Churchill. Arranger: Connie Jones. This is a high-quality Dixieland/swing set recommended to lovers of classic jazz. The musicianship in Jim Beebe's group is quite high; the standards are given fresh interpretations, and there is plenty of variety. In addition to the leader's fluent trombone, the band features cornetist Connie Jones (who on ballads occasionally hints strongly at Wild Bill Davison), John Otto on clarinet and alto, the fine stride piansit Paul Asaro, bassist John Rany and drummer Johnie Faren. Singer Judi K. is a welcome addition on five numbers, including "Blue Prelude" and a spirited "This Joint Is Jumpin'." Other highlights include an upbeat "Chicago," "Bye & Bye" (which has a surprise "glee club" vocal from the group), Johnie Faren's feature on "Drummin' Man," and the Duke Ellington-associated title cut. This is a difficult release to resist, particularly for listeners who enjoy hearing three horns jamming together. ~ Scott Yanow
Down Beat (3/97, p.47) - 3 Stars - (out of 5) - "...straight out of the Jack Teagarden and Eddie Condon tradition, when the music shed its banjos, tubas and press rolls and became a professionalized branch of small-band swing....The ensembles...possess all the easy, nicely rounded timbres of top swing virtuosos and don't try to reach into the mythic New Orleans past..." Sultry Serenade
$8.85 Personnel: Lou Rawls (vocals); Tommy Strode (guitar); Herb Ellis (piano); Jimmy Bond (bass guitar); Earl Palmer (drums). Lou Rawls gives a riveting performance on Live!, covering standards from Basie/Rushing's tambourine-jumpin' "Goin' to Chicago" to T-Bone Walker's foot-stompin' "Stormy Monday," and whole lot in between. Each selection is as inviting as the next, featuring Tommy Short on piano solos on some. On finger-snappin' numbers like "In the Evening When the Sun Goes Down" and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water," the crooning baritone wails his way through the lyric. The only single to chart from this live set was the moderately paced number "The Shadow of Your Smile," the theme from the movie The Sandpiper. But Rawls loses no steam; he romances the lyric with vehemence. It peaked at 33 on the Billboard R&B charts after only two weeks. (It was ...
